Catalin Cimpanu, writing for BleepingComputer: The VPNFilter malware that infected over 500,000 routers and NAS devices across 54 countries during the past few months is much worse than previously thought. According to new research technical details published today by the Cisco Talos security team, the malware -- which was initially thought to be able to infect devices from Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear, TP-Link, and QNAP -- can also infect routers made by ASUS, D-Link, Huawei, Ubiquiti, UPVEL, and ZTE. The list of devices vulnerable to VPNFilter has seen a sharp jump from Cisco's original report, going from 16 device models to 71 -- and possibly more.

You can only get infected on a Mikrotik device if you're leaving the web port open to world, which any admin knows (on any router) is the height of stupidity. VPNs are there for a reason. None of the MTik devices that we manage (some with old firmwares) have been infected because nothing is open apart from the VPN.

I read because QNAP and the other mentioned models used BusyBox for their userland, and likely a vulnerable version. Synology uses discrete Linux binaries for its userland, so it wasn't vulnerable because of this.

I would say that Busybox is a good product, but there have been some CVEs last year which required updates.

Synology is a Taiwanese company, so I fear it less than a company on the mainland.

Since the research is still ongoing, Talos researchers "do not have definitive proof on how the threat actor is exploiting the affected devices," but they strongly believe that VPNFilter does not exploit any zero-day vulnerability to infect its victims.

Instead, the malware targets devices still exposed to well-known, public vulnerabilities or have default credentials, making compromise relatively straightforward.

The "core software" is Linux. Pretty much all routers (most standalone devices really) run Linux under the hood. There are a few oddball routers which use a RTOS like QNX or VxWorks (these are the ones you want to avoid if you're hoping to flash a third party firmware). But the vast majority run Linux because it's free. This malware probably wormed its way in via a universal Linux exploit which was patched in the production releases of Linux distros, but not in the much-slower-to-update router firmware releases.

The Airport Extreme is hands down the most reliable consumer grade router out there. In fact, it's better than a handful of business class routers I have used. For years I refused to buy one because I thought "why, it's just a router and it's expensive!" Well, years of fighting with various routers configs, reboots, updates, custom firmware, etc, and noting that the routers I was buying had started going up in price, I finally caved and bought one. My main reason was a friend stated he'd not rebooted his in years and I had no issues at his house. Sure enough, plugged it in, and a host of network weirdness disappeared immediately. Reboots? I generally don't even think about it unless some notification comes out that actually makes me think about my router. I've had more trouble with my ISP in any given year than my router. I'm going to buy another one before stock runs out.

My Airport Extreme 5th Gen Router NEVER needs a Reboot, has most of the bells and whistles expected in a modern router (separate 2.4 and 5 G Networks, Guest Network, Flexible Port Forwarding, etc.) Plus, I can even securely config. the thing over WiFi from my iPad if I so choose.

Plus it is hands-down the easiest Router I have ever had to set up in Bridge Mode. And it even supports some type of Mesh networking that I have never understood, since I don't have two of them.

Yeah, now I wish I'd gotten one of the "ac" capable ones....

FYI - I do have to agree that the interface on the airport utility 6.x is too simple, for about 0.01% of the target audience. It's adequate for 99% of the things people would ever need to do. However, not having an admin interface that exposes the functionality that was available in the 5.6 utility such as signal strength, logs, etc is something I highly desired enough to install 5.6 alongside the new 6.x utility. I don't know if 5.6 works with the latest AEs though.

Yeah, I know which one isn't going to crash (mostly because the user). Any $100+ router I've ever used never needed reboots, and those that are $100 only crash when heavily loaded (which I expect).

Well, considering I've owned at least 3 that also purported to run DD-WRT reliably, which they did when the hardware didn't lock up.... At least I'm assuming the hardware because it was a consistent problem across multiple firmware releases across all three. And several of those routers were in the $150 range. And I don't expect my router to crash due to load unless I'm actually intentionally causing a DOS situation on the interface. Normal TCP based usage should not crash a router, ever.

I've also never recieved a notification to reboot my router, so there's that.

I was referring to notifications about issues regarding routers, as sent by various newletters, RSS/Atom feeds, ISPs or even noted in websites about potential router issues.

I enjoy the simple interface because it suffices and I don't see it often. If I was in a situation where I constantly needed to reconfigure my router, I'd place a linux/bsd based firewall into the DMZ configuration and deal with all configuration there because I'd likely need more capabilities than any simple consumer based router provides. Right tool, right job. In fact, this is how I'm setup. You can continue to enjoy your unreliable and inherently less capable router, however.

My Asus router has to run an older firmware version because the LTE USB modem I use for internet doesn't work with the latest firmwares. And yes I run one of the third-party firmwares which incidentally just announced they were no longer going to update this router anyway. No matter what, this Asus is a dead end even though it works just great.

My backup router is a Netgear which also happens to be on the hit list, yay, but it doesn't work with the LTE modem so it can't be a frontline device anyway.

The LTE modem is a ZTE with an internal router so it may also be vulnerable. The fun never ends.

All of this is sending me screaming out to Microcenter to find something that doesn't suck .... and whimpering back into the maw of Comcast so I can ditch the ZTE LTE modem. Dammit.

No thank you. Host files, these days, are a niche thing. They were more useful back about 15-20 years ago. We've been over this. They are a form of black listing and no matter how you look at it, black listing is too limited. You need to combine black and white listing with some kind of heuristics for a defence in depth.

From a usability POV, having to launch your app to download a list of IPs to load into a host file is too primitive. Things like browser add-ons do this automatically on launch, update in the background and combine white and black listing and offer far more powerful rule creation that you can do with something like a host file.

Writing a better hosts file program would be kind of like writing a better DOS TCP/IP driver. It's over. Done. Useful in a few niche cases and those who did that sort of thing, back in the day, aren't spamming forums about it.

Of course, most people have more than one 'win' to crow about ...

I have to load your software, wait for it to download a list from various sources, wait for it to modify my host file and _then_ I can open a browser and view a web site. With a browser plug-in, that all happens as I open the bdrowser. The fact that a host file resolves more quickly is true, but irrelevant. Your metric is meaningless. I'm not constrained by CPU cycles. I'm constrained by time and attention. I don't want to have to launch one program just so I can use another.

Your 'Facts' aren't relevant. You repeat them because you a) have very poor comprehension and what appears to be a cognitive defect and b) have nothing else.

*laughing* That's because you're soft. I snapped my ACL, tore up the meniscus. Had the knee rebuilt. Was told that without the meniscus that knee would have less stability. So I built up muscle to support the knee. I still run, have spent most of the last decade practising martial arts, playing soccer, touch-football, cycling, parkour etc. Took 18 months of solid physio and remedial exercise but I'm not ending up like those sad old farts who reminisce about how good they used to be.

Injuries are things you work to overcome. Not excuses.

I've researched some of those "testimonials" and I can vouch that the quotes are, indeed, accurate. And that's the only good news for APK.

Most of those are tiny snippets that have been taken out of context. The comments often include criticisms of his software to go along with the positive portions of the comments that he quotes. Some of those comments also criticize his behavior, which is on display here for all to see.

Many of those comments were also posted in storied where APK has engaged in lengthy flame wars and, in some cases, has completely hijacked the discussion. Some of them contain the same comment reposted repeatedly to circumvent moderation of his spam, just like in this article.

If APK posted links, the entirety of the comments and the discussions would undermine most of his claims. He's good at posting links repeatedly, but linking to those comments would actually be embarrassing to him.

I know. I've searched for some of them and managed to track down about 1/2. I linked to them a while back in another thread (actually, a couple of years ago IIRC).

As you say, what he has quoted is accurate, but often taken out of context. I don't think he actually has links. I think he has a file with anything he thinks supports his position. Lots of cut and paste.

The thing is, there are claims he could make that are more reasonable and more easily attested. It's the exaggeration and demand for accolades that's off

Looking at criteria in DSM IV, there's an element of clinical narcissism to his behaviour. The grandiose claims and exaggerated self-importance are what we most often associate with narcissism, but the root is a deep seated inadequacy that simply cannot accept any criticism - internal or external - and that can manifest as rage or the sort of denial, dismissal and outright ignoring of anything that might contradict the fragile self-image that they try to maintain. The origin is usually a failure to properly develop empathy and APKs inability to read social cues and/or model appropriate behaviour is typical of narcissists.

His need to 'win' arguments; his swift claiming of victory and his constant claim that people think he's good all seem a desperate attempt to find 'narcissistic supply' - an external validation to try and fill the internal void.

He could 'just' be 'spectrum' - the lack of social modelling matches, but the grandiosity, hyper-sensitivity to criticism and living on past achievements doesn't fit.

On top of all of that, there really does seem to be some kind of reading impairment - his comprehension is apalling and he seems to skim and use keywords to extract meaning. He misses more than he picks up and just glosses over when he's called on it. His inability to express himself except in the bizarre sentence fragments he uses seems to be worse these days than in older posts on things like Ars. I'm not sure if he's getting worse, or lazier.

I argue because a) even narcissists can learn to model behaviour given enough time and b) he seems to need it. He settles down after a flame war or so and we don't hear from him for weeks or months.

He's been especially aggressive in this exchange, 'though. I wonder if there's something more than usually 'wrong'.

In response to whether registered Slashdot users say they like and use your work, the answer is yes, they did. I don't think anyone is disputing that.

I'm not in the business of producing software for general use. I do some software development, but it's for use by me and other scientists in my field to conduct research. I have had my research published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. I wouldn't judge you based on your number of peer-reviewed publications, because you do a different type of work. That would be unfair, just like you questioning people here about whether they've produced software that other Slashdot users actually use.

Regarding your software and the reviews, a lot of users have remarked that your software is effective at producing a hosts file that improves security and generally works well. I don't think that's being disputed. I will give you credit in that regard, too.

However, you also overstate the security that a hosts file can provide. Other users have said that, and I wholeheartedly agree with their assessment. You also become far too angry at any perceived criticism, no matter how fair or justified that criticism is. Your reactions are beyond being over the top when you're threatening physical violence against people. Many of the reviews give you credit for your hosts file engine while also pointing out that you overstate the security that hosts files can provide and that your bouts of anger are unhelpful and unwarranted.

I'll admit that you are sometimes are on the receiving end of awful comments, such as the AC reply to this classy post you made: https://linux.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=12148450&cid=56667926. Stringlist objects ARE what got me better performance (vs. using VCL GUI lists combined w/ StringList objects in Win ver) in Linux STUPID!

I DO NOT USE sudo FOR PING (I bypass the MAC restriction on ping & ping itself in Linux, using the TCP/IP stack code ported to Object Pascal instead YOU DUMBASS).
