Baidu Ends Brazil Operations, Will Now Handle the Brazilian User Base From China (zdnet.com)

Chinese web search company Baidu is ending its operations in Brazil, five years after it set up shop in the country. From a report: The company will be handling the Brazilian user base for its web services from China. There are currently two employees working on formal procedures related to the firm's local shutdown, according to local newspaper Valor Economico. A representative for the company said there is no formal statement for Baidu's departure from Brazil. It is also unclear whether Yan Di, the Chinese executive responsible for the Brazil operation, will still work for the company. Baidu's plans for the country changed as part of a shift in the company's global strategy. As part of the new plan, the firm started to spin out business units responsible for apps and mobile advertising, as well as financial services, to sharpen its focus on artificial intelligence.

In Brazil Baidu got a very bad reputation because of its software forced install.

There is a quote created for this: "Do you want to install Baidu? No! Baidu installed successfully!"

And it was very very hard to uninstall any Baidu software.

Baidu is basically malware, I have fixed countless computers were their software was sneakily installed and was dominated by it, and it is probably a state sponsored spy tool.

Didn't read TFA, but there is a hurdle, if I not mistaken, legally the data of Brazilian people should stay within the country to be accessible by authorities if needed, I doubt they will keep infrastructure here just for that.

      Me, too.

Also, it makes little difference for me who is spying me but if you're gonna compete with Google, good luck! Maybe it works in China by government mandate, but remember: Microsoft went home crying. And Google uses no underhanded tactics.

Whatever they do, however you complain, it cannot be said ever that Google plotted the early demise of a competitor. They're simply overwhelmingly good at searching.
