Honda Will Use GM's Self-Driving Technology, Invest $750 Million In Cruise Startup (arstechnica.com)
Honda announced today that it is investing $750 million in Cruise, the self-driving car startup whose majority shareholder is General Motors. The automotive company is also planning to invest $2 billion over the next 12 years to develop and manufacture self-driving cars based on Cruise's software. Ars Technica reports: Honda has been working on autonomous vehicles since at least 2015, but progress has been slow. In 2015, the company said it hoped to have a partially self-driving car ready by 2020 but that a fully self-driving car won't be ready until the 2030s. In 2017, Honda said it was aiming to offer freeway-only self-driving capabilities in 2020 and then reach "level 4" capability -- cars that are fully self-driving, but only in certain locations and weather conditions -- by 2025. That compares unfavorably to Waymo, which is planning to launch a level 4 taxi service this year. Cruise is aiming to launch a level 4 taxi service next year. Honda's new plan is to build self-driving cars based on Cruise's hardware and software designs. So far, Cruise has focused on modifying the Chevy Bolt for autonomous capabilities. But this new Honda vehicle will be designed from the ground up for autonomous operation.

I live in a pretty busy part of San Francisco and see Cruise vehicles all the time. A couple of months ago a homeless "adventurer" (as in the young guy with a skateboard and a pitbull who camps out next to the Muni station, rather than the middle aged guy with a shopping cart muttering to himself) decided he wanted to f with the car at a big intersection. He stood in front of it and spread his arms and legs out as if he were a big target. The car pretty much freaked out make tiny, halting movements, until a few seconds later the driver took over.
My point is, I wonder how they are going to deal with this type of thing. San Francisco, which is pretty much ground zero after Mountain View for self-driving cars, is also chock full of a-holes.
Lam!
My point is, you're a spineless coward who spent more time trying to mock homelessness than have a valid point. You suck indoors and out.
Or maybe Honda has shipped millions of vehicles while still known for reliability and they realize that shipping a half baked product which occasionally runs over a hobo isn't an acceptable product. Does that compare favourably for the silicon valley circle jerk?

Too many companies are rushing out projects before the Olympics because all regulatory bodies are turning a blind eye.
All those tests with a self-driving taxi in Tokyo were a complete scam with a whole enigeering team sitting in some control room, ready to press the brakes.
Time for the free market to shaft the CIA creations of "Silicone valley", the advertiser-peddlers, the lying fElons and the tax thieves.
I never use cruise control because I'm a bad driver.
Why don't you nuke a TV dinner for yourself there BillyCock. Redefine that poverty line a little more each day, Republican trash. Live it.
Free Software developers of the world, open your eyes! Our communities are being raped, our work pillaged.
Detestable villains - mean spirited, belligerent, racist, unprincipled - are using underhanded tricks to force hypocritical "Codes of Conduct" on the projects we built.
The only purpose of these CoCs is to allow so-called "Progressives", who have contributed nothing to the project, to conduct witch hunts against anyone who opposes them. Thereby they plan to steal our work for their shadowy corporate paymasters.
You can readily tell these CoCs are not about "just being nice" - because they are ALWAYS supported by the very LEAST NICE, most aggressively mean, hate-filled, and shamelessly bigoted people you can imagine.
If a project to which you contribute has been raped by CoC-mongers there is a simple solution: WALK AWAY. Never contribute again. If you have a patch almost ready, count the time you spent on it as a loss and throw it away. If you see a security issue, remain silent and do nothing. IT'S NO LONGER YOUR PROJECT. YOU ARE NOT WELCOME THERE.
If you are evaluating new software, don't even consider any projects burdened under the tyranny of a CoC. Their technical attributes do not matter - just don't consider them. Never be openly political, always make up a technical reason for rejecting CoCed projects.
Don't argue in public about the CoC. Doing so only exposes you to needless risk. You might be dis-employed, blackballed, and even set up for a #MeToo purge. Just stay far away.
Comrades: Individually we are powerless, and easily crushed beneath the iron boot of Corporate Social Just-Us. But together in solidarity we are millions and we are strong. The Internet itself depends on our collective labor. If we stop working, the internet stops working.
Free Software developers, save yourselves and save your communities! Just WALK AWAY from any project with a CoC. Without our labor they are nothing.
Slashdot is quietly deleting comments and it is alarming.
Full disclosure: I am a troll, but like many trolls of the past, I have concerns about Slashdot censorship. I was around when Scientology forced Slashdot to delete a comment, something the editors hated doing. I was around when sllort posted about suspected editor moderation and hundreds of editor mod points were used to reduce an entire massive thread to a score of -1 and anyone who modded up those posts was blacklisted from moderating. I'm not making vague assertions but rather noting that I saw one of my own posts disappear less than 24 hours ago.
I very rarely agree with APK about anything, don't believe he's truthful, and direct a lot of my trolling at him. However, I believe him when he says many of his comments have been deleted.
Whether justified or not, comment deletion is censorship. These comments are inflammatory toward their intended target, but are not breaking the rendering of Slashdot, nor do they contain unlicensed copyrighted material. Slashdot doesn't acknowledge that it deletes comments. There are no clear standards for comment deletion because the same comment can be posted many times but only one instance gets deleted. Slashdot is arbitrarily deleting comments without any acknowledgment or standards for doing so.
For a site that champions free speech and transparency, Slashdot doesn't uphold its own expectations of others. It's time for Slashdot to come clean and tell the truth about deleting comments. And if they don't, it's time to go somewhere that doesn't have this type of censorship.
IIRC Hotz made a self driving Honda 3 years ago.
WTF have honda been doing all this time ?
GM is shit. Honda isn't. Honda just lowered itself. Disappointing
Stupid.
They should be working with Tesla.
Self driving cars have not evolved to not do stupid things such as not hit pedestrians, parked cars, and pedestrians.
Drivers need jobs.
Many people like driving cars.
If there is a real war, GPS satellites will likely be destroyed, leaving an entire nation stranded and unable to produce product.
