Google's Night Sight Feature Arrives For Pixel Phones (venturebeat.com)

Google on Wednesday started to roll out 'Night Sight', a much anticipated-feature to the Pixel smartphones that is designed to help users capture better photos in low-light conditions. From a report: Night Sight made a premature debut in October courtesy of a leaked app, but today marks the start of its official rollout. Beginning this week, Night Sight will come not only to the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, but to the Pixel 2 and original Pixel. And judging by our preliminary testing, it was well worth the wait. I once used my smartphone to make a video of a dry thunderstorm while it was directly above my house (the lighting was cloud-to-cloud). With the regular camera video, it would only capture the brightest flashes inside the clouds, but take the mp4 video file onto a PC, run some ImageMagick to boost the contrast and reconstruct the video, and all the other lightning flashes would appear.

It's all of 20 inches long or more. It slithered out of your sphincter so fast you almost think that is was alive. It may or may not have a strong odor but you wouldn't know way because the speed of its swift evacuation still has you standing there with your pants down, and your face slack-jawed in amazement.

The night vision goggles of the American forces was such a huge advantage, almost all the night time sniping and attacks were thwarted. And our forces could move with impunity at night because the enemy can not see them.

So there was a real danger the war could end and the military industrial racket could lose billions of dollars. Now we can put all those fears to rest, and invest in all the defense companies. These phones will be a big hit in Afghanistan. Now the playing field is leveled and the insurgents and the enemy can drag out the war.

I can hear champagne corks popping all over wall street and investment houses. Great job guys. Next time do it earlier, dont drag it out till the last moment.

Brilliant move - now the Taliban will be stopping regularly to take Night Mode pictures, presenting a perfect target for snipers with real night-vision goggles.

Even better, the pictures will sync up to Google Photos along with their GPS coord metadata, get siphoned via PRISM, and the targets plotted in real-time on a convenient tactical map.

The key trick they’re using is exposure stacking, i.e., aligning and adding together a sequence of images. While you could use this to achieve night vision, the price would be lag of a substantial fraction of a second, to collect the required number of images. Not what you want while driving. Worse, I bet the system will fail with fast-changing scenes because it won’t be able to align consecutive images. So there could be a market for a night vision device based on this approach, but it’s going to have to be plastered with warning stickers about not using it for things like driving where reaction time is critical for safety.
