Dell Says It Detected A Security Breach Earlier This Month, But Financial Data Was Not Exposed (zdnet.com)

An anonymous reader quotes writes: "Hardware giant Dell announced today a security breach that took place earlier this month, on November 9," reports ZDNet. "Dell says it detected an unauthorized intruder (or intruders) 'attempting to extract Dell.com customer information' from its systems, such as customer names, email addresses, and hashed passwords." These are accounts used for shopping on the official website and the official support forums. "Though it is possible some of this information was removed from Dell's network, our investigations found no conclusive evidence that any was extracted," the company said in a press release, also adding that hackers didn't target payment card or any other sensitive customer information. After it detected the breach, Dell initiated a password reset for all Dell.com customer accounts. The company also said it notified law enforcement and hired a digital forensics firm to perform an independent investigation.

you get both a purchase id, and an order number. The purchase id is worthless to you. Customer service doesn't know what it is. If you don't get the order number, you have nothing. Also the shipping estimate is always wrong. Ignore it. They used to have a build-test-ship status. Now it is only order received, and shipped. And you don't get the shipping update until after it has already arrived.

So I am not surprised they get hacked.

A fair number of dell customers know what it's like to buy a dell computer, and then get a call from "Dell", complete with all the info about the computer including it's service code, which basically ends up being a tech support scam situation.

They used to leak customer purchase / contact info like crazy, either insiders selling it out the back door or something. I'd love to know if that has every come up before and what they've said about that in the past, because it's just not possible for these scammers to get this info otherwise.

My mom architected the software system that made Dell a major manufacturer. When you placed your order online, it would check whether all the parts were already in stock or if your build would wait a day for parts. It checked which other machines were being built and scheduled yours for optimal efficiency switch between orders. After scheduling your build, it gave the customer an expected ship date.

They replaced that system with "a cool new system" made by young people who "know" JavaScript, from copy-pasting Stackoverflow. Node.js is cool because it's newer, so it must be better.

I have recently received several calls from "Dell customer support" that identified the model of Dell computer I am using as a way to make it seem they were legitimate.

I immediately hung up. Now I'm wondering what other information (like my computer's service number or other identifying data) they might have.
