Electrical Stimulation of Brain Trialed As Aid To Treating Stutter (theguardian.com)
An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian: People who stutter are being given electrical brain stimulation in a clinical trial aimed at improving fluency without the need for grueling speech training. If shown to be effective, the technique -- which involves passing an almost imperceptible current through the brain -- could be routinely offered by speech therapists. The latest treatment, which is combined with fluency training, is not expected to completely cure people of their stutter but could potentially give them more control over it. The brain stimulation, known as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), involves strapping electrodes on each temple and then passing a current through the head. The current is weak enough that people are either oblivious to the electrodes being switched on or feel just a slight tingling.
The stimulation increases the firing rate of neurons in certain brain regions, which scientists believe could make it quicker to learn thought patterns associated with fluent speech, and make the effects of training more permanent. In the trial, the 40 participants are asked to speak in time with a metronome, saying one syllable on every beat. During this task, people who stutter typically become completely fluent. "The idea is that if you stimulate them while they're fluent, you're reinforcing that fluent speech process," said Jennifer Chesters, a speech and language researcher at the University of Oxford who is involved in the trial. "And hopefully that will make it more likely for them to use that process in their normal life." Each time a neuron fires in the brain, its connections with neighbouring neurons are strengthened or weakened slightly -- this is how learning occurs. With stimulation, the threshold for neurons firing is lower, so this could accelerate the rewiring that occurs during fluency training.

You sound like you need to HOST dicks and balls, instead of posting nonsense... GAYpk
You sound like you are slated to host a ton of dicks this season
As posted by idiot libtard beauhd, stupid idiot retard 19 year old fake "senior editor" moron is too stupid to understand that this garbage has been tried for the better part of a century. It's as modern as kirkbride buildings and hydrotherapy. Ask me what it's like to work at an insane asylum and have to handle these poor saps day in and day out and know the old timers who dealt with this hogwash. Heck, there are a lot of people who had lobotomies and are vegetables to this day. Read about Rose Kennedy reciting the Lord's Prayer while some hipster jammed knitting needles into her brain. It's great! Call it TENS, call it transcranial, call it whatever. When I lived in Cali as a child, one of my classmates got the electrodes to the brain. They messed up with an honest mistake and hit him with milliamperes instead of microamperes. It didn't harm his brain as far as I could tell, but he had PTSD from the experience of how painful it was.
Long story short, this is barbaric as we are talking about "applying some stimulus to a general area" that consists of hundreds of millions of cells. These retarded misleading millenials are going to do some serious harm to society if they keep posting such stories without ANY knowledge of the history. Implant a probe and "target" the current? Great! Now we get it narrowed down to tens of millions of cells having a hurricane passing over them, and we get to slightly damage motor function and memory at the same time.
Enough, BeauHD. You know nothing. You should be an auxiliary to EditorDavid.
Up the voltage!
wrong. How fucked up are you?

How inner ears supposedly work:
Hairs in the inner ear are of varying thickness and respond to different frequencies. You hear by the stimulation of the hair, the more the hair moves, the bigger that frequency component.
How ears actually work:
The inner ear is a sealed tube of liquid split into two, the wave bounces off the end and cancels the incoming wave. Nearer the ear is a longer wavelength, so silence there corresponds to the presence of that longer wavelength. Nearer the end of the tube corresponds to shorter wavelength, so lack of stimulus at that nerve corresponds to presence of the shorter wavelength. The bounced back cancelling wave means that a hair detects SILENCE as the reflected wave CANCELS the incoming wave.
In other words, the *lack* of stimulus is what tells the brain there is a sound there.
The canal is split into two, which is probably how the ear separates true silence from the presence of a tone causing silence at individual nerves.
Tinnitus is damage to the nerve (at either brain or ear end) that the brain thinks corresponds to a tone, because there is sound, and this nerve is not firing so there must be a tone for that nerve. So the brain puts in a tone. The tone is high pitched, so likely the same nerves are detecting multiple harmonics of each frequency and that is why we hear octaves as the same tones. (Octaves are doubling of frequency, so the same note would fire the same nerve and be reported on the same neuron and so we would perceive it as the same tone).
It's maybe not related to Stuttering, or perhaps it is, since stutterers don't stutter when singing. Which suggests it is some sort of echo cancellation gone a-rye.

Awwwwe poor whittle APK. Papa loves you so adawwwabull you should be on a stage you cwever whittle guy let papa pinch your cheeks again
I will punt you almost into next week and you will be unconscious
Democrats don't work. The steal "free" stuff from John Q. Taxpayer.
Republicans don't work either. They have servants for that.
Something is wrong with anyone who claims to be a card carrying Democrat or Republican yet still works for a living.
They keep trying to use this, dispute how much harm has been caused with this in the past.
They are failing to learn from past mistakes...
I'd wait to do this until the side effects can be studied years later (I guess that means I'd never do it). People hit with lightening gain random additional aliments when they get older, such as suddenly going blind. Maybe overloading the brain isn't a good idea A stutter or the other issues they use this type of thing for aren't worth losing a sense. I'd only trust it for the super suicidal people who can't help but keep trying to kill themselves.
As a tangent, using it on other body parts is fun. Feels like a infinitely controllable vibrator but without the physical sensations while being able to change from high-pitched vibes to rumble vibes. In order words, weird and amazing. Buy one instead of a fast impact machine...
Only LOSER POSER's like "anonymous COWARD" like you would make such a stupid accusation. Tossing msmash's salad never got ne'er-do-wells any AIDS, even the airborne variety, lol...APK
P.S. => I would love to taste the fresh virginal meat of 19 year old MILLENIAL beauhd (as referenced in posts above) before he gets USED AND ABUSED at the colored Oakland queer bars..apk
You don't have the faintest clue what you're talking about. You are a Trumptard trying to play a brain surgeon like Carson. Go stab someone in your child's mind. Get your fantasies out and over with before you die horribly, traitor.
If I had mod points, I'd mod you up even though you posted as AC. I don't know WTF is wrong with that BeauHD guy, but I totally agree that this article and the electroshock "therapy" it promotes is utterly insane.

I take back the above comment. I was watching myself jack off in a mirror and was getting too excited while I posted the above comment. I turned the mirror for a sec to post this comment. Now I'm going to turn the mirror back so I can watch myself again...so ronery.....gayPK

I wonder if these patients have been checked for Alpha wave issues. It sounds like a problem that could be caused by sync issues within the brain.
Now if we can get kicks in the balls as a treatment for lisps, we're all set.
Until Morale Improves
Why not 10g of mushrooms up a tree during a storm?
Traditional speech therapy only works for a short time. It isn't a cure. It's like the myriad "cures" sold by the pharmaceutical companies. The pills, eye drops, etc., don't cure chronic conditions - No profit in that. You need to use these for your entire life. What this world needs is actual cures, and not just palliatives.
Knew a guy who stuttered until he drank. He wore nothing but plaid. Ergo, beer works. If you wear plaid.
it works as mind control as well as bypass social anxieties, cheaper than a 5$ wrench serving from the Party Van or NSA, oh and the people that dont acknowledge NAZI (National Zionist) superiority are doomed to undermeasure the power of their next adversary who only appears to get rid of the Useless Eaters.
