Developers Accuse Sony of 'Playing Favorites' With PS4's Cross-Platform Support (arstechnica.com)

After years of fighting the idea, Sony announced last September it is finally bringing "cross-platform gameplay, progression, and commerce" to the PlayStation Network, with Fortnite as the first example. Months later, the company's efforts have yet to gain wide traction and now we may have identified the bottleneck: Sony. Several major third-party developers have accused the company of standing in the way of letting the PS4 versions of their games play nicely with other platforms. ArsTechnica reports: "We just launched Wargroove with crossplay between PC, Switch, and Xbox," Chucklefish CEO Finn "Tiy" Brice wrote on the ResetEra forums. "We made many requests for crossplay (both through our [Sony] account manager and directly with higher-ups) all the way up until release month. We were told in no uncertain terms that it was not going to happen." Brice's comments came days after new Hi-Rez Studios CEO Stew Chisam tweeted at Sony that the studio was "ready to go when you are" for cross-play on Smite, Paladins, and Realm Royale. "It's time to stop playing favorites and tear down the crossplay/progression wall for everyone," he said.

In a follow-up tweet, Chisam explained that Xbox/Switch cross-play has led to a direct improvement in the Paladins online user experience, including reduced wait times, more balanced matchmaking, and fewer "bad" matches overall. Brice's comments in particular come in direct response (and contradiction) to a recent Game Informer interview in which Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman Shawn Layden said that cross-play was open to pretty much any PS4 developer that wants it.

I have no love for Microsoft, but it's clear that they are more responsive to their customers than Sony. That's not saying much, but there's not a lot of choice in that market. (I've given up on console gaming for now, mind you. I sold all mine to a local shop and moved on. I can emulate the classics.)

then why have they rejected every one of Squre enix's attempts to get ff14 to work on the xbox? with the claimed reason they will only allow it to happen if they get dedicated servers to keep xbox users away from everyone else?

ff11 was ps2/360/pc all cross play
ff14 is ps3(was)/ps4/pc cross play and they tried to get microsoft on board.

If I remember correctly, the issue was that FF11 had two paywalls: one for Xbox Live and one for the actual game. This is because Xbox Live doesn't actually pay for server hosting costs, but Microsoft doesn't want competing subscriptions on Xbox Live, either. Effectively, Microsoft wants one subscription that gets you online services for all games on the platform. This is a one-size-fits-all approach that works fine for matchmaking-friendly games and not much else. Any time someone's using a dedicated server on Xbox Live, they're paying for it out-of-pocket - in fact, in the really early days of Xbox Live, you weren't even allowed to do that!

The next question you're probably asking is why Microsoft allowed FF11 to do this at all. The answer is that Microsoft wanted the Japanese market badly, but they don't know how to make games Japanese people like. They assumed getting Final Fantasy on the box would make it sell. When FF14 got out of development hell, Microsoft had already given up on growing Japan and thus carving out more exceptions for Square didn't make any sense.

(To explain how broken Microsoft's strategy was... Final Fantasy isn't even the most popular JRPG franchise in Japan! That honor goes to Dragon Quest. And the big trend in Japanese gaming at the time was Monster Hunter on the PSP. Imagine if nobody in America had a PS4, but they knew shooters were popular here... so they commissioned EA to go make a new Medal of Honor: Warfighter sequel, but instead people go buy a Nintendo Switch to play Fortnite.)

Roll on a decade and the PS4 is absolutely killing the XBO in terms of units stripped, suddenly it's Sony who are being dicks.

I can understand this is anti-consumer, especially when it comes to PS4 / PC as they can't really be said to be poaching each others customers. However Sony have been given the opportunity to give Microsoft a good kicking whilst they are down and make their customers regret not buying a PS4 like their friends, and they'd be rather stupid not to take it.
