Digital Cameras and UNIX

Alex Lewin asks this rather simple question: "Anyone out there using digital cameras with Linux or FreeBSD? Curious if the interface protocols are fairly generic, or if they are convoluted and complicated. Specific information about exactly which cameras you're using would be great!"
