Can you make your own Netcenter Channel?

PhoneBoy asks: "The recent additions of Slashdot and MozillaZine have prompted the question: what does it take to make your own channel at Netcenter? Netscape's website does not make this information very available."

One option I would see on the netcenter is an option to move the "mid collum" channels as well, if that is possible.

It's great of you to make such an offer.

Why don't they allow anyone to create a Netcenter channel? Netscape could define a protocol for regular submissions. It would increase Netcenter usage, since people could get all their regular news from a single portal. Word of mouth on people's favorite micro-portals would push Netcenter as well. What a win-win situation that would be... any hope for it?

The official answer is: "right now, you can't make your own Netcenter Channels."

That said, I have worked with sites (like freshmeat, mozillaZine, mozilla.org, Linux Today, and BeNews) to create new channels.

If you are interested in other channels, let me know. I can't guarantee that a channel will get created, but I can try.

Keep the following in mind when suggesting new channels:
    1) I will need the to work with the people who run the web site that you want to see turned into a channel. I can't turn sites into channels with out the site's permission.
    2) some sites are more likely to become channels than others. I can't turn big named high dollar sites into channels as easily as open source project sites or noncommericial sites.
    3) good channels are more likely to be done first. If a site has content that updates often, then it would make a good channel. freshmeat and slashdot are excellent channels for this reason.

    Disclaimer:
There no guarantees that a given channel will get created, or once created, a given channel won't be removed. These new channels aren't something Netscape officially supports.
