page that Nate and I meddle with is back up after a lengthy
chunk of downtime (Crackers Hardware Crashes and Bears Oh My).
It's currently undergoing a total rewrite so don't complain about
problems. But check it out if you're curious, it's pretty sweet.
The next version is a whole new ball of Wax.
Somewhat related is Adfu- a Banner Ad server
written by the BSI Perl Monks. It's been handling Slashdot's
banners for over a week now and is quickly stabilizing. Source
release is RSN. It handles a couple million banners a week for Slashdot, so it'll
probably work for smaller sites. And it's a lot cheaper then Double Click.

Am I alone on being against banner ads taking up bandwidth? Sure Slashdot deserves the money, but I'm one to always hit mute during advertisements, and if that's not possible I use some type of ad blocker.
I've noticed the new adfu.blockstackers loading images, and after recently being in negotiations for advertising space (I haven't forgotten guys!) it sounds like a -wayleet- bit of advertising bannerscript.
I was actually going to ask nicely if they were going to GPL the code, but, as usual, Rob's leet and has allready said he will. (Well. Release the source at least. I may be foolishly optimistic that he's GPL'ing it..)

IT's not so much an issue on /., but if I visit the "mainstream" sites, (CNN, CNET, *choke* ZDNet, etc) the ad servers are about 20x slower than the server I'm intending on hitting. And of course, the pages are coded in such a way that the page doesn't get rendered until the ad is fully downloaded.
It's not an issue of bandwidth, it's an issue of waiting 5 minutes to read something that should have taken 20 seconds of my time.
I saw some *INCREDIBLY* lame Java ad once that had some stupid sound in it. It was a pong game in the ad space, and made a freakingly annoying "blip blip" as the ball went back and forth. Of course, you couldn't turn it off. And it tracked your arrow too. Was tha lamest thing I ever saw, and it 100% justifies my use of Junkbuster.
Besides, how different are we from the Lynx users? They don't see ads either, and I don't see you complaining about *THEM*.

Do you get the $$ only on clickthroughs, or do you get some for simple displays, as well? Still trying to figure out how all this works...

If ad-disabling software gains prevalence, advertisers will realize this, and take their money elsewhere, leaving web sites like
"Spoofing" the ad engines doesn't help anyone in the long run.
believe it or not i have seen sites that not only look good in lynx but are even DESIGNED for it. ummmm.... i had a whole list ready (was going to make my lynx-links page).
/. but for games... kind of wierd because if you go there with mozilla its completely graphical but with lynx its all text. at the bottom it says its designed for lynx!

i mention legions only because i wish more sites would take the time to set up special versions of their site based on the users browser. that would be very cool for us lynx users.

Cookies are pretty obnoxious. Rather than turning them off, I think it would be funny to exchange cookies with other users, sort of like the cypherpunks/cypherpunks account - gee that's one active user.
If we got the same cookie distributed to thousands of users, the whole user tracking thing would start to fall apart.

First of all we are assuming that advertising is the only possible source of revenue for Slashdot. The WWW is not network television, which would not be around without advertisers. Advertising came into the WWW, not the other way around.
Now with the many number of Slashdot readers, we can all agree that there is some demand for the web site. Out of all of those readers, you are telling me there is not one person or group that is willing to support Slashdot in terms of bandwidth and hardware? And the only possible solution for this is through banner ads?
I am against banner ads, and I have always been. Just because I love Slashdot doesn't mean I'm going to make an exception. I believe that Slashdot is a great site, and great sites will have supporters. No one wants to see a great site go down, and if possible, will do what they can to help.
This definitely very true. The ads slow the sites down incredibly. Remember when most of the bandwidth was spent on content? Slashdot is not as bad as many other sites, but for me I prefer to block them all if possible. I simply have zero tolerance for ads.
Very typical of a person who is pro-advertising to use the term "rat-fucker." I'm sure that will get you very far in business.
First I don't believe advertising is the only possible source of income for Slashdot. There may be other ways to get bandwidth and hardware. Maybe a company or school sees the demand for Slashdot and can contribute. No I personally can't provide the money/utilities Slashdot needs, and I doubt that any ONE person could. But you are narrow-minded in thinking that advertising is the only solution.
"Getting a clue" involves thinking of many solutions, and the first solution that comes to mind is not necessarily the greatest. I'm not complaining about the ads, I'm merely stating my opinion on them, and possible many others'. I have no tolerance for advertisements whatsoever. It is not a complaint, it is a statement of fact.

The ads are not that big K-wise and can be easily ignored by anyone who doesn't have some sort of freakish concentration problem. You ungrateful bastards should be clicking on the ads like crazy, not complaining about them. Clickthrus drive revenue and I'm sure Malda could use the money. Get a clue dumb-ass rat-fuckers.
doubleclick.net, flycast.com.. all of those leave cookies in an effort to profile my browsing habits. That's the main reason I turn them off. Does adfu do this, or does it just benignly display ads?

Also.. if I turn off ads with junkbuster on my laptop, and write a script so my router browses slashdot pages throughout the day, are we even?

Rob's got huge expenses - bandwidth costs a fair bit - I know, I run a number of sites (granted, with *much* less traffic than /.) and I have to run ads to pay for the telecomm costs.
Remember, unlike me, he is doing this full-time, and also has to eat, pay rent, etc.
Now if he would only post announcements for me even once in a while

uhm, turn java off, to begin with. you can always turn it on for sites that actually need it, as opposed to sites that will annoy you with it.
me, I tried cookie jar and junkbuster, and while they did a good job of filtering, I noticed enough of a slowdown to make me turn them off at the end. I'm waiting for Mozilla to grow up and stabilize, to have filtering in the client itself.

if the "write ups" were GPLed or something similar.
I mean, I wish there was a notice that said "by hitting the submit button, you agree to license your write-up under the GPL".
and then I wish the database of write-ups were made available via ftp.
if Everything did that, then I suggest it might get really big: Britannia sized, even.
How about I just take the money out of the SendRob2Skool fund and use it to buy a baseball bat to hit you in your big "air-filled" head.
OK, to be fair, it's not the ad banners that make the Dejanews redesign Really Suck, it's the repurposing of the site as "The Discussion Network." Yahoo Lite, anyone? You'll see what I mean if you check it out.
