Lycos Doing mp3 Search Engine

Matt Lee sent us a story about Lycos hopping on the mp3 bandwagon and creating a search engine to find the controversial music format. The funniest part is that 'mp3' is the second most search-for word on Lycos. After 'sex'. Anyway I'm glad to see it.

Interestingly, this is much of the same debate as the UltraHLE story. Read one of the last comments, entitled something like "Piracy DOES hurt", and see for yourself.

If copying music is juridically (sic) wrong, then how do you suggest an artist moves the music from a 24 track master tape to a CD they can sell? Maybe all musicians should record only one-offs in one take straight to CD and sell them that way.

Copying data is necessary. It's the distribution methods that are currently a bit lacking.

Hooray for Lycos. Hopefully it's one step closer to a system that's fairer for artists and those that enjoy them.

  12. Lycos Mp3 search -- a bad thing? by Anonymous Coward · · Score: 0

Well, theoretically, Lycos' search engine could really be a bad thing. I mean, if the people are offering illegal rips of commercial tracks, couldn't they be taken down as quickly as they're put up.

Of course, that assumes you think downloading such tracks is morally wrong. I see it as recouping almost $1000 in costs spent on CDs with about $200 in worthwhile songs on them. Either way you look at it, MP3 is here to stay and it's going to change how the big labels do biz.

Oh yeah, and audio casettes. And CD-R's. And just to be safe, let's ban aluminum foil in case anyone gets any ideas about wrapping any around a cylinder and making a crude phonograph. We need to make sure that no one has any access to any means of recording audio, because there's the chance that someone might bootleg some music.
