ISDN Problems w/ SuSE v6.1

ulissesr asks: "Hi there! I just bought SuSE Linux v6.1 featuring linux 2.2.7 and had no problems installing it. My problem is my ISDN adapator, which is a pcbit-d by Octal! I just haven't found a way to get it to work with the new kernel or could it be the new ipppd verion? Can some good soul point me to a dial-up script for ipppd with PAP authentication?"

    It has been mentioned on the linux-kernel
    mailing list , that the egcs 1.1.2 C compiler
    miscompiles the pcbit ISDN driver in the 2.2.x
    kernels.

    Major problem: although SuSE probably spends the greatest effort of all distributions on ISDN (they also employ one of the core isdn4linux developers, Karsten Keil) they, like everyone else, have the problem that 2.2-ISDN (I'm not talking about standard-2.2 ISDN, which is ooold, but also about the newer patches) is buggy compared to 2.0. If you really need/want ISDN and it doesn't work with 2.2, what the hell, go back to 2.0 and try again. 2.2 needs to mature quite a bit anyway. Remember, 2.0 is at sub-sub-level 37, while 2.2 is at 10 and also significantly more complex.

    Reason: ISDN is very popular in Europe and _especially_ in Germany, where SuSEs home market is.
    Just wanted to mention this explanation to not let anyone think I'm biased (more than usual).

    I always just choose to have the tty emulation built into the kernel and use that to dial up. i4l always gave me too many problems; now I just use the normal pppd with /dev/ttyI0, and everything works fine.

    There's lots of information on the web for solving your problem; I just put up a RH 6.0 box with an ISDN card, and it works like a charm. Only things you need to do/have:

    SuSE isdn-kernel drivers, can be found at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/isdn4linu x/v2.2/isdn.tar.gz

    SuSE isdn-utilities, can be found at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/i sdn4linux/v2.2/isdn4k-utils.tar.gz

    Some scripts, I pulled mine from http://sites.inka.de/picard/rh52_isdn.tgz

    Untar the ISDN-kernel drivers, run the std2kern-script included to put them into your kernel directory; then recompile your kernel.

    Untar the ISDN-utils, run make menuconfig and make install when you are satisfied

    Last, check if the RedHat scripts like your Debian scripts, if so, use them, else you can use those scripts as a starting point for your work.

    Should be enough to keep you busy this weekend, success!

    Fortunately, SuSE is the best Linux distribution when it comes to built-in ISDN support. You need to install the i4l packet (at least) and configure your card using yast - I tried this once and it worked immediately. That should be even easy for beginners (I'm used to i4b on FreeBSD/NetBSD systems which I'd consider expert-only).

    And please use the SuSE support database which probably contains answers for your questions:
