Linux and G.lite

Graymalkin asks: "With the new G.lite standard for ADSL service having been agreed upon, I only have one question: Will the new modems be Linux compatible? Does anyone have a Compaq G.lite modems with specifications so that others have a place to start? Are they going to have their own controlling chips or will they be akin to winmodems?"

The only place the G.lit or any other protocol matters is on the side of the DSL "modem" that pluges into the wall. Most of these units connect to your PC via ethernet. So as long as they run IP between you and the modem it shouldn't matter. Now, if your phone co. changes to G.lite, you may need to buy a new modem. As I will if SWB changes. Dang them! :)

Anyway, if it's a PCI card, yeah, likely you're tooled. As for SBC (to be correct about abbreviations), they're not going to do anything to break their existing DSLAMs -- if there's an upgrade it should be via software (don't recall the flash capability of the 1000). Also, technically you're not talking IP to the modem -- you're talking ethernet (or ATM), as it's a bridge. IP only becomes relevant at the other end. And if you want to feel screwed, consider the fun if SBC decides to go with PPP over ATM (which seems unlikely at this point -- it'd be a hell of a changeover). (Note that the last only applies to SBCIS -- other ISPs make their own endpoint choices.) Yep, somebody'd whip out support, but hey.

Did you NOT noticed the ':)' at the end there? And no, it's SWB has a different DSL setup than PACBELL, so it's not SBC. If you use your ATM25 connector of you speak ATM to the modem. And what protocol do you have to bind to the NIC in your machine to make it talk to the 'modem'? IP. An ethernet card doesn't do ATM. And as for the breakage, ask many of the USWest users. As far as I know they ARE doing the switch to PPP. So it CAN happen.
