Pro/ENGINEER under Linux?
Adam Winnington asks: "I've been considering loading Pro/E on some of the new Dell Precision 610's that we have just recently received. However, I don't see E&S video drivers for linux or anything from PTC about it. Has anyone done this, or must I install Windows NT?"
proe works with mesaGL (i.e. opengl functionality on X) or without it (altho it wont do shaded 3d spinning of objects..only wireframe). the drivers probably wont be a problem if you can get linux binary code. i usually use my proe (ver 22) from my linux box using an X window to a high powered SGI machine.
There are several Unix ports of PRO/E. I worked
at an engineering company that had it, but I never
got a chance to try it on Linux. If your PRO/E
rep is around, he should be carrying a few CDs with
all the ports. I'm sure he'll let you test it -
I would have but emergencies arose. Damn NT boxes...

Last I heard, It was single threaded and could not use multiple CPUs. Has this been fixed?
And which is better Dual CPU NT or Dual CPU Linux?
(Is there a major difference in the platform/proe SMP? that would make Linux or NT better?)
Thanks
With SGI support Linux in a big way, maybe that will shake them up a bit. If you want it, I think we need to lobby them for it.
Interestingly, we did some benchmarking of a new SGI visual Workstation(NT), a Compaq AP500 workstation(NT), an SGI Octane (250Mhz) (IRIX), an 500Mhz Alpha box (DEC Unix) and an aging SGI IndigoII(IRIX). As you'd expect, the Alpha stopmed all over eveything. The AP500s, however, returned better results than the SGI VW, both running NT. and the AP500s are 10-20% cheaper for comperable configurations.
They are, however, butt-ugly.
You can get 2-3 machines (either SGI or Compaq) for the price of a single Alpha station, but NT sucks, so that brings us back to Linux.....PTC, are you listening?!?!
