well said. id hate to live in a country where we only had state-sponsored movies, software and music. some such countries exist, one which comes to mind is north korea. possibly proof that the concept will work, but im guessng that the anti-ip poster has a hard drive full of western music and TV shows, rather than the excellent output of the peoples republic. capitalism is the best system we have so far to decide what gets made. the anti-ip pro-piracy crowd want all the content that capitalism provides, without putting in any work to get it. such people would generally be called leeches or freeloaders.

sounds like you need to add some supplementary basic economics classes to your timetable kiddo. Digital content still costs money to make, and the content providers need to eat too.

yawn. has it occured to you, that the fact that you can make a perfect copy of something that does not diminish its supply, has absolutely fuck all to do with whether or not the guy making the thing gets paid for it? If it costs $40 million to make a singl ditial print of Lord of The Rings, and 0.001c to copy it, are you REALLY that nieve to think that the product should sell for 0.001c? Seriosuly, do some very basic maths, buy a book on 'economics for idiots'. Its not rocket science. You are not paying the marginal cost of production, you are paying the marginal cost PLUS a percentage of the fixed costs of manufacture. Thgis has been the case since the dawn of time. Nothing has changed except a lot of script kiddie geeks think they can steal other peoples work. Im sick of seeing such totally ill-educated crap on slashdot about how its fine to copy IP and not pay for it. Its bullshit.

"you just suffer less incentive to come up with innovative ideas since copying someone else's is easier. " read that as ZERO incentive. Whats the point of making new music / movies / agmes / software, all of which is copied trivially. Kiss goodbye to all those industries. Also, kiss the pharmaceutical industry goodbye too, why bother researching cures when you can copy the next persons. Face facts, this hippy philosophy works fine for swedes IF they can copy all the IP made by other countries in Europe, japan, and the US. Does the 'pirate party' advocate only copying products made by other swedes? or are you happy to leach purely off other people? "Freeloading, maybe ... but not the whole way." ha, that makes it ok then. Thanks, I always thought your party was nothing mroe than a bunch of freeloaders, nice to hear it from one of you, openly. "Most people on /. hate IP laws anyways" wow, what a cutting argument. most people I know hate paying taxes. lets abolish them! yipee! im sure theres no downside! maybe you can persuade people in other coutnries to pay all the taxes so you lucky swedes can freeload from them eh? This isnt a legitmiate political party. Its students who have yet to experience the way the world works. Thankfully they got the electoral ass-kick they deserved.

Agreed 100%. They seemed to advocate that anyone could copy anyone elses intellectrual property without permission. Best summed up as the abolition of conventional capitalism. If they had just been honest and renamed themselves the 'communist party' they might have done a bit better. Hopefully now people will see them for the freeloading jokes that they are.

most people in the UK are more concerned about violent street crime than they are about some local police authoruity tracking everyone, which isnt exactly likely. The majority of people in the UK see these things as keeping the streets safe, not without justification. Countless criminals are caught VERY quickly, because they are easily recognised from CCTV mugshots.

  10. Re:Apathy? on CCTV Cameras In UK Get Loudspeakers · · Score: 1

not apathy at all. Whenever there is a major crime in the UK, like the 7/7 underground bombs, or the murder of some kid in the street, the first thing you see on TV is vidoe footage of the guy who di it on the way to commit the crime. I really cant see this to be a *bad* thing. Granted, some evil corp(tm) could be gathering all the data and using it to sell stuff to us, or whatever, but by and large, these cameras are only noticeable when someone commits a crime, and they help the cops track the guy responsible. Like that homophobic fruitcake that blew up a gay bar, who was caught on about a dozen cameras, and quite rapidly hunted down and arrested. Its all evry well panicking about your privacy and 'teh evil state', but if you happened to hang out in the next bar that manaic was going to blow to bits, you'd probably be quite thankful for the things. thats also true for single women, and the elderly who arent so terrified waiting at a bus stop alone after dark, because they at least know that anyone mad enough to attack them is likely to get caught doing so on camera. They tend to make me feel safer, not less free.

"Food is free. Farmers provide the same service Apple does: a high-quality easily found vegetable/fruit/chicken dinner/bottle of orange juice at a reasonable price. And people pay for it despite the fact that anyone armed with a single orange can produce them in unlimited quantities." You are free to produce your own music videos if you think you an make them cheaper. Its a free market, just like the free makret for food. I lvoe the way people moan about music being low quality, but pirate it furiously anyway. And anyone being able to grow apples is not a way to justify just taking someone elses. Yeah, you can grow apples, go buy the land, plant your tree and wait a few years. Thats not the same as just stealing someone elses. Think it through.
