    I still don't understand how the hell the tags work. I brief help page write-up would satiate my curiosity - I'd be willing to bet I'm not the only one.

    * Exactly how heavy of a beta are tags still under? You're aware that not every tag works (when you click the triangle sometimes you end up on your user page, or elsewhere)
    * How does the algorithm work (and how the hell do some of the crazy one of a kind tags get chosen)?
    * How much /. human intervention is involved (i.e. Do you guys just sometimes say "screw it, this tag is stupid, so I'll remove it")?
    * Any plans for future development (suggestion: if you are using an algorithm, show the tags about to be promoted in a different color, so users can input those if they agree).

    A fully automated tag system is not an easy thing to do (I would think), so I'm not griping. I'm just genuinely curious (but admittedly still too lazy to look the code up).

    You know... I'm appreciative of globalism and the fact that Bush majorly f'ed up just about everything with his cowboy, idiot attitude, but...

    I've got to say that as a US citizen, when I see riots in South Korea against the presence of US soldiers (and beef, I think?) in Korea, I'm inclined to say to hell with it. Yeah, North Korea is nuts, yeah, they're a major issue for the South and Japan, but how about a little bit of f'ing gratitude toward the US for backing you guys (the South) up every time North Korea acts stupid.

    I mean, why are we putting our troops on the line when all I see are protests against the USA? Is there any gratitude and goodwill towards the USA anymore, or are they just going to jump ship to China now? If so, why are we still there?

    Yes, I understand this perfectly. My point is that this contention does exist and that privacy is NOT a thoroughly tested concept in our courts - this is a legal FACT. Our OPINIONS (and I suspect the opinions of most folks in the USA) are that there does exist an implicit right under the 4th 5th and 9th amendments. The right to privacy has been recognized in a very limited case relating to contraception between a married couple, but not to the sweeping point GP seemed to suggest, and many people believe (incorrectly) privacy explicitly exists in our constitution - because they don't bother to read the constitution.

    It's the ignorance of folks like you that opponents of the Bill of Rights were afraid of.

    Ah, excuse me, but I'd humbly suggest you reread what I'm saying here - because I believe we agree. I'm saying that burying your head in the sand and saying "it does exist, it does exist, it does exist" is wrong. Although the current administration does recognize a right to privacy, previous administrations have taken questionable steps on the basis that they don't have barriers to taking certain actions (read: echelon, citizen monitoring, etc), and the lack of an explicit guarantee in the constitution (or laws) to privacy was perhaps the basis of their opinion. The counter to your argument would be:
    Preamble to constitution:

    We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity

    Article II, Section 8, Clause 1:

    The Congress shall ... provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States

    etc, etc...

    I am not making anything up here. I'm merely pointing out to /.ers which may not be familiar with law that this is an argument which does exist in the legal community and one which is far from settled. All you've got to do is type up "constitutional right to privacy" into google, and read for days, if you want. If you understand the technical legal basis of the argument those who proselytize security over liberty, you have a basis for forming cogent counter arguments.

    You can be emotive and indignant, or you can look at what I'm trying to communicate here.

    There is no constitutional right to privacy. You can look and look, but there's nothing that says 'you have a right for the government to not look into your shit' (or any more respectful verbiage). The right to privacy has never been fully tested in the courts, in the opinion of at least some legal scholars.

    Fourth Amendment reads:

    The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

    That does NOT say you are guaranteed to privacy outside your house, or that the government can't snoop through your activities... That means that unless there are laws in existence governing the type of circumstance AC found herself in, the government can do what it pleases and be legal.

    Now, I personally think that the right to privacy implicitly exists in the constitution (our president shares this view), but many folks think this type of thing is just a guaranteed right to us as citizens... it's not.

    This is quite unreadable (source below for a more readable version), but the answer to your question is that the money comes from the people owning the stock, or the people willing to lend the company money. Below are the financial results for EA. I've bolded the only two quarters in the past three years where they've actually made money. I love video games, but I'd never buy the stocks. The financial results are terrible!

    I dunno. I always liked Encarta - though, as other posters have said of themselves, I guess I haven't used it in years. I think the richness of Encarta still hasn't been 100% matched by Wikipedia yet, though the detail and level of content (on an average basis) certainly has been vastly exceeded.

    Encarta was among my favorite MS products, I am a little disappointed to hear it's not going to be around anymore. But... that's capitalism.

    WTF? I've never seen a bot hold a conversation that was anything close to a person. Is this really an issue at all?

    The closest I've seen I saw probably about 10 years ago and her name was Alice, I think. 'SmarterChild' on AOL was halfway not crappy too, I guess. I just had a conversation (if you could call it that) with Elbot. Not to take anything away from the work the developers have done, but Elbot wouldn't fool anyone for more than a question or two

    AFAIK every other bot sucks.

    But it needs to happen. Consider the creation of the air force in the early part of the last century. For the US, the airforce used to be a part of the Army, if I'm not mistaken. But the brass realized how fundamentally different Army work was from Air Force work.

    And if I was to make a comparison, Army and Air Force are at least as similar as [Name your branch here] and IT work are. You just have to look at the countless fuck ups in the military with regard to IT management for proof. Corporate America separated IT from operations decades ago, but our (Western) militaries are still woefully out of date. I hope someone understands this SOON, before the Chinese eat our lunch.

    If we want to get serious, we need a new branch, or we'll get no where.

    Rainbow's End was the first thing I thought of too. I believe the novel was set in 2023 (maybe it was 2033?). That sounds like a world with the type of tech that I'd love to live in. Ubiquitous self driving cars, medical miracles, retinal overlays which alter your visual reality. Though I suppose I could probably do without the human race teetering on the edge of oblivion thing.

    I had a similar thing happen. It was a compare game, where you had to stare at the screen and look at two pictures and try to compare one pic against another and see which was different.

    I looked and looked for about 15 seconds, but couldn't find _ANY_ differences. Then a picture of that damn exorcist chick flashed up and made a helluva loud noise. That startled me pretty good. But one girl in the office saw it and literally fell out of her chair.

    I think the compare thing is pretty good, because you're really looking closely at the screen and not expecting any movement or change.

    Yeah, funny thing is I read that and thought "well this will likely take longer than a decade and a half to see" (I read it when it first came out - I think the book was based in about 2023, IIRC).

    I didn't think we were anything close to that. I'd never heard of augmented reality before. I'm amazed they are this far along... 12 month double... double that in 12 mos... double... double... etc, etc... Hell we might actually get there!

    Hardware is very predictable, but software isn't. I didn't think we would be able to get this far by now. Interesting...
