More seriously, you should keep in mind that the law that bans nazi material in France has been voted by a democratically elected
french parliament. It's the choice of the french people. The real challenge here is technical: how can such a law be enforced in our new
interconnected world ?
Hitler was democratically elected. That does not exculpate the doctors and generals of the 30's and 40's who devised the technical "solutions" sought but Nazi Germany.
Democracy is good but it does not relieve you of moral obligation.
I believe this one was not "stolen" but Nazi booty taken after the war. If it were made of gold they'd no doubt be paying reparations to Holocaust survivors for it, but otherwise this sort of thing seems to be vae victis.
Glad to see that not everyone around here is completely brain-damaged. Blocking anonymizers, translators, etc. is necessary if you're going to filter URLs. Same would go for any web->web gateway. I personally think filtering software is dumb, but it is ridiculous to attack it on these grounds.
So I have to wonder, just why did this "Seth Finkelstein" write this piece? Was he really stupid enough to think that filters are a conspiracy against privacy.. anonymity.. translation?!? Or does he hate this company for other reasons, and hoped that slashdot readers just wouldn't notice the gaping flaw in his attack?
If it is the second case, then he has accomplished his goal. It is clear from the posts that the majority of slashdot readers are in a state of.. bliss.. as it were.
You forgot to include to parts where Linus tries to troll Tanenbaum (and fails miserably). Good thing he decided to stick to kernel-writing, and leave some things to the experts...
more than 80% of all wealth generated by the stock market has gone to the wealthiest 10%
of the population. They make much of it through speculation,
That scheme does not work in the long run. If there were a recipe to consistently beat the market, the people using it would quickly suck up all the money. Speculation is gambling. There will be some rich people who make a lot of money off of it, and some rich people who lose those shirts over it. Most people come out about even. Of course you usually only hear about the people who make it big.
It is true that there are some special forms of investment (real estate, corporate raiding) that you have to be rich to try. But beating the market on these is also risky. Otherwise all rich people would do it.
Rich people get about the same percentage yield that you or I can get with a few thousand in a growth fund. The difference is that they have more money to start with. But then they pay a larger percentage in taxes as well
Much to my chagrin, I've got to agree with Katz on this one. This Deggan guy, although well meaning enough, is ignoring his civic duty and indirectly hurting us all. The name sounds Irish as well. Now, don't get me wrong -- I'm as strong a supporter of civil liberties as you can find. However...
I feel that democracy is essential to maintaining our rights and freedom. And if the citizenry does not take part in politics, (even if they do vote), then that is no democracy. That is why the attitude of Deggan and people like him is so harmful.
Now, we're not exactly knocking at the door of tyranny yet. But any careful observer, or casual reader of slashdot, will note that our freedom is under constant attack... and eroding steadily each day.
I sometimes think the Athenians had the right idea -- all citizens were required to vote! But in lieu of that, I must urge each of you to become aware of what's going on. Read many news sources. Chat it up with your neighbors. And for Tech's sake, vote!
The real irony is at the root of the problem: technical decisions are being made by non-technical people. If they were techies in the first place, they would understand how much Macrovision sucks. Instead, they are the highest-paid workers in the technical industry, they don't know how anything works, but they have a vague idea that if they find the right people are pay them enough, technology can be made to do anything they want (i.e., unbreakable copy protection). Sucks, eh?
Slashdot can be fast because the
underlying database is not a RDBMS. Not having transaction, or locking give you an order of
magnitude performance increase.
Read again what Taco wrote. Slashdot does lock, as it must if each attempted post ends up mapping to a unique id. Apparently the only way to do this with MySQL is to lock all of the tables you're updating.
In principle, you can speed things up by having a table for each story. However, that is the most unclean fuckhead dumbass model I can imagine, and I would not implement it if you paid me anything less than one million USD.
There are ways to make a real database fast. That's why Oracle engineers and good DBAs pull down the big bucks. I respect MySQL and Microsoft Access for what they are: cute toy databases. I use MySQL to catalogue my CDs. They're casually useful in the same way that spreadsheets and perl are.
But if you want something that actually works, it really is worthwhile to use a fully-featured rdbms.
that actually works,
Some drugs can be used safely, but DUI in any circumstance is no joke. People kill and are killed quite frequently due to this... especially young adults.
I can believe that most lawyers smoke weed, or have at least tried it. But how does this tell you that it doesn't "make you a loser?" If anything, it would seem to suggest the opposite...
Agnew said the phrase, but he didn't create it. Safire was a speechwriter for Nixon (and thus Agnew as well.)
Other notables such as Pat Buchanan and Ben Stein were Nixon speechwriters. They have certainly gone their separate ways.
he stole that from william safire, whom i used to think cool until he started writing about dr. wen ho lee.
Lots of ppl think EU and US are natural allies. What a laugh.
Whats really needed is a PRC/EU alliance to bring an end to the overbearing imperial buttmunching ways of the US.
Dude, if you want to see the stupidest, look no farther...

So did the Axis powers manage to crack the corresponding US/UK/French codes?
(Of course, that sort of matter is probably still classified information...)

There is never any proof that is 100% watertight
Oh yeah? Prove it, smart boy!

Not only was the Book of World Records a spinoff from the brewery, but so was Student's t distribution. (I shit you not.)
On a side note, I was about to link to Eric's Treasure Trove of Mathematics but it seems that CRC has shut them down.
That really really sucks, much more a trademark dispute over some stupid domain name. Content is where it's at.

Let me tell you, I spend the better part of the day lounging on my fat ass and reading slashdot. Nader's definitely the one for me!
Holy shit -- a genuine C. S. Lewis Republican! Rock on!!
Ever considered running yourself? Voting is only part of the civic duty done by a good citizen.
Now that's pushing it. One may as well credit high energy physics with developing the internet.
Gore's personality quirk may be meaningless but it's definitely there.
Excellent. This is the most deliciously funny comment I've read yet.

don't worry, clinton will veto any of the really bad crazy stuff that congress tries to do, like funding the government
The Japanese audio track is amazing (great surround sound)
So it's not voice acting, characterization, or even sound effects that interest a geek.
A geek judges a show by the number of channels. That, and the number of impossibly large, quivering, cartoonish breasts.
come on... schoolchildren don't look/smell/act that bad!
