It all depends on the importance of the data you have on the drive. A hard drive is a "wear and tear" part and simply will not last forever. S'not a question of if...but a question of when.
That being said I have an old Dell Poweredge 2200 that I think was bought in 1996 that's still running with the original HDD. I also have bought many DOA drives and had several die in a matter of days. It's a crap shoot.
If your data is important and you can't lose it then invest in at least a RAID 1. If you're a geek and want to have some fun (and burn some bucks) then go RAID 5 or RAID 10.
Many motherboards nowadays have some kind of integrated SATA RAID controller. If not then an IDE RAID card (PCI) will suit you for storage only...you won't get lots of speed out of it.
Good luck.
1. Tucows seems to be the registrar for spamhaus.org. They seem to be Canada based and will probably laugh at a court from Illinois telling them what to do. And if ICANN has a half a brain (which they have) they won't touch this. The international community would flip...
2. Spam protection should be in layers just like all security protection. Should one fail or let something slip through then another layer should catch it.
I very seriously doubt that Spamhaus would be forced to shut down. And if they did shutdown then I very much doubt the impact would be anywhere near what the claims are.
Setup an enclosed area with one of walls next to the window. Build your own insulated dry wall borders if you must...framing is fun. Then just grab a cheap window mount AC unit and set it up.
With the supplies and cost for something like this you'll save over somekind of per server solution. I would literally buy someething like the $100 AC unit Wal-mart has and setup a space just large enough for a rack. Nuthin' fancy.
This is a temporary solution at best to an infrastructure that is taxed at or beyond it's capabilities. Already I would wager several students have developed work arounds to bypass these new censor tools. Bandwidth will jump again eventually and then they'll be faced with the same problem all over again.
When we moved into our house our Propane account with Amerigas got all transferred and happy into our names. They setup an auto debit from our checking account of $75 saying it was our expected monthly use. Any fees due at the end of the year would be billed or credited to us if we overpaid.
At the end of the year they automatically pulled $1450 out of our checking account with no notice. Apparently they severely underestimated our propane use and never noticed the bill building up. And they never actually notified us of the pending charge.
Fortunately we had just gotten paid so it cleared. But we had to do a fair amount of shuffling to keep the rest of the monthlies from bouncing.
