  1. cracking open the case--Simple on The Cathedral And The Bizarre · · Score: 1

    Need to get a 6X00 open? (6400, 6500 models)
while some have pointed out, its quite easy to take out the motherboard, there is a door on the back being held by 3 screws, which allow you to remove the motherboard, slides right out.
need to replace one of the drives?
    No prob.
in the front of the comp, at the bottom, there are 2 tabs, which you can push in/up. it will loosen the front panel.
Depending on wether the cover has been removed previously, it will either pop right off, or it will still be kind of stuck.
If stuck, you can take a flathead crewdriver, and gently hold it against the side of the front bezel, about 4 or 5 inches up.
do that to both sides, and the bexel will pop right off, revealing the HD (mounted sideways to the left) the CD-ROM drive, and the floppy drive, and free bay for optional zip drive (standard 5 1/4 bay, just need the right bezel for a cd or any other device).
the only problem with that model case, comes if you somehow fuck up your IDE/SCSI/Floppy cables, then you are in some trouble..
to get to the housing assembly for the cables, you HAVE to completely disassemble the ENTIRE case and chassis, as the entire machine is built around that one part.

    Hope this helps

  2. Re:Rack-mounted (i)Macs on Rack An iMac · · Score: 1

Yes, and its quite easy to do.
but, if you didnt read the main reason he was doing this, it was because of the fact that an iMac at $999 is by far a lot cheaper than a much more expensive G4 server...
Even though the monitor and casing of those iMacs are going to waste, its still more cost-effective to use them for Filemaker than it would be to do the same with a G4 tower, esp. since FilemakerPro makes no use of the Altivec instruction set, which gives the G4 its biggest boost.
    Just my $.02 worth...

  3. Re:Is he nuts? on Mac OS X Desktop and GUI Design · · Score: 1

    Yes, you are missing something.
The MacOS does not yet support long filenames.
Long life names are supported under Sequoia, better known as HFS+. HFS+ was implemented in MacOS 8.1, although a lot of the features are still disabled, namely long file names and support for files > 2GB.
As for the collapsible "explorer" style directory navigation, the finder has had a method of viewing subdirectories where you could expand their contents while in list by clicking a triangle on its side, much as Hotline does. but in the way that they exist in MacOS X, it will be a first.

  4. Re:Multi processors == Multi monitors? on ATI Introduces a Parallel Processing Video Card · · Score: 1

Actually, ATI has done this previously with cards available for the Blue and White G3's. They had a single 66MHz PCI card with 2 Rage128 Processors each with it's own 16 MB of RAM, allowing you to have a multiple monitor setup with only one card
