Quite true. but if more and more people start using youtube for purposes like this the first thing after performing a step of such type would be to ban youtube in the country and then metacafe and then whatnot. This happened in india when government tried to ban all the blogs. Too bad the plan backfired.
I am not talking about those software. The software i am talking about are the really famous one like linux, kde, gaim you name them. And that's what we are considering here. I do agree that a lot of OSS around the world are made as hobbies and are made to rot once the developer looses interest.
I have been a part of the open source scene over a long period of type. Although automated softwares do exist for checking the code a lot of testing is also performed by going through the code. And yes consider the scenario. You are a n00b developer wanting to do something. What do you do. You pick a piece of software (open source of course) and you go through it to get the basics of actually building the software. Now there are many n00b developers and they start with something and they usually pick a popular software due to this reason that popular software is studied by a lot of people around the world. And n00b developers are also capable of finding bugs. Aren't they?
They view point of many people may differ from mine. And yes i started with openssl:) as i needed to do it for a class project.
Consider the case of open source software. An open source software is tested by a whole lot of people over the world and everyone is free to take the code and test if. On the other hand in case of proprietary software this is not the case and is tested by far less number of individuals.
The true measure will come when a proprietary software which has been made open source is tested against an open source software and i can not think about any:(
What do you think folks.
lets just see how long does it take google to enter the online retail bussiness. they did it with paypal they will soon do it with ebay.
