Yeah... that's definitely not true. If you spend your time in college wisely, you can get a lot out of it. If you go to college and learn platform / language specific things then yes it will be obsolete (and you will probably be an idiot for paying for it). Education (as in schooling) does count for something.
That being said I know quite a few people who will graduate from college and have no idea what they are doing. I feel sorry for the company that doesn't do their homework when hiring.
I agree and have noticed the exact same thing. I'm geting my BS in computer engineering and nobody cares about certifications at all. I have not had one employer ask me about them at all. They put much more value on real world experience.
Almost every scientific discovery in history is result of trial and error. You need failures to have success... what more do you want said?

Every company does this to some extent. I'm not surprised at all.
