many thanks for the support Feign Ram, though i don't know that i can claim any special insights into the viability of TurboGears. will certainly give it a look, however.
They're pricy - the "One" bag I use is a 128 (got it for 70 at the outlet), but I'm a big fan. Sealed seams, big enough for a change of clothes along with a laptop, and a small little external pocket for an iPod.
I'm willing to pay a bit extra b/c they give money back to environmental causes and design responsibly (non-toxic dyes etc.), but that may not be your gig.
i got a copy of SuSE's Enterprise Linux Desktop about a year ago to test, and YAST kept giving me an error on the boot config. went through it a bit with support, checked forums and when i seemed to be the only one experiencing the problem i asked for another copy.
the end result? the replacement copy installed perfectly. it was simply bad media.
maybe it's the case here, maybe it isn't. but i don't see how you can do a review without clarifying that.
it's fine to criticize the support because that did seem like a very poor experience, but i don't think this qualifies as a "review" given the lack of an attempt to see what the actual problem was.
in case folks haven't seen it yet, this exists. it's called emusic.com. no, it's not a 1 to 1 analogue, but it's pretty close.
using your criteria:
(a) got people to use a simple website that worked (b) used a standard uncrippled music format (c) put everything in one place with links (d) showed artists how to make money by making tracks available for free download
a. check b. check - MP3 c. check d. check - Emusic Express
not it's not perfect, to be sure, and is not for the mainstream listener, but it's got some great stuff on there. stuff like Guided By Voices that iTunes has just picked up has been on emusic forever.
this, to me, is the right model. pay a reasonable fee, get a reasonable amount of downloads (it's not unlimited any longer).

The scale is not logarithmic, just a basic plot of the correlated rankings.

because DBD::XBase isn't included in over 70 internal IBM projects, ;)
