... Open source and free software are moving ahead nowadays, but we sure could use some open source-like hardware. Everybody is against big software companies making big bucks on std.users, but still - we could use a equivalent in hardware. The manufacturer who makes cheapest things gets all the users.

They should be based in some small european country - maybe Denmark or Sweden as there is a clear message from goverment about spam-mail (it will be made illigal in the next couple of years)
Well - normally this kind of insanity hits US first - and it's really suprising to see such a conservative country as UK accept this kind of treatment..
Well - I've been programming with wxWindows (available at http://www.wxwindows.org) - And i think of it as a perfect replacement for MFC, if you think about serious cross-platform coding.
The technology is still quite new, but there is virtually nothing that cannot be done with it at the moment.
