  1. Similar technique used in Cooledit on Cleartype In Depth · · Score: 1

Cooledit (an editor for X11) uses a similar technique to this, which also should result in sub-pixel resolution of anti-aliased type on LCDs. URL: cooledit.sourceforge.net

  2. Re:Cool... is this the modernized Amiga? on AtheOS · · Score: 1

As some others have mentioned the graphical interface visible in the screenshots is all original (according to some it resembles the BeOS api but I cannot personally attest to that). It is not X, either, but a vaguely X-like system in which client and server (must be on same machine) communicate by IPC. The author has a blurb about the Amiga-likeness, too...which more or less says that the OS was inspired by the Amiga but now bears little resemblance to the Amiga except for the window decorations. The gnu libc has been ported by the author; that accounts for the ability of Apache, emacs, etc. to run.

  3. Re:Linux/PPC support? on Apple Demonstrates A Dual-G4 Power Mac · · Score: 2

Linux/PPC handles multiple processors just fine. There are hardware limitations inherent in the way the system bus works, but that's unavoidable and any operating system on multiprocessor hardware is subject to it. LinuxPPC (the distribution) officially supports multiproc 603(e)s including IBM RS/6000 quad-cpu boxes and the more common Apple and Be machines of a few years back.

  4. How should an amateur get started working on AI? on Ask Jordan Pollack About AI - Or Anything Else · · Score: 5

It seems to me that a significant problem holding back the development of AI is that few non-professionals grok AI well enough to offer any contribution to the AI and open-source communities. What do you suggest that I, as a person interested in both AI and open source, do about this? What are the professionals in the AI field doing about this?

  5. GUI configuration utilities on Ask Miguel de Icaza About Gnome · · Score: 2

What are your thoughts on graphical interfaces to configuring a user's system (e.g., Red Hat's netcfg)? Are these expected to become a better integrated and more important part of the GNOME project? Are there any ambitious projects in the works (like a universal configuration tool)?
