O.K. the debate over fair use and intellectual properties etc can rage for ever and the only solutions will depend on who has the better lawyers and most money (D'OH).
What I am getting really tired of hearing though is that every pirated song, program, gold dubloon etc is equivalent to a lost sale. If half the world's population downloaded a copy of cubase last year that does NOT mean that the writer has been ripped for some hundreds of billions of dollars!
So does this mean that a ban on firearms in the U.S. is the next step? Sure there are some legit uses of hand guns (and napster) but people are often tempted to use them for infringing on the breathing rights of others... rock on hypocrisy

Do you get that same feeling of frustration, anger and a sad sense of fatalism that I do every time an important issue comes up in this country? You KNOW what is being proposed is just wrong, you KNOW that the vast majority of people will be opposed to it but that the unalterable course of any bad idea in this country is:
a breif media circus
opposition from a vocal minority
implementation
eventual grudging acceptance derived from a lack of alternative. No wonder we drink so much....
dammmm every time i think my country couldnt possibly disapoint me any further it finds a way... I'm getting so sick of the way this country is run and that sucks cause it really is a nice place to live otherwise. It's getting to the point that the only entities that have any rights in this country are corporations and the only opinions that are listened to are those with a few billion$ to back them up.
We have a constituion that guarantees nothing much more than free trade between the states, more pollitions per head of population than any other country on earth and less desire as a nation to change our lot than (see recent attempts at becoming a republic for eg) than.. than.. nuts.. run out of suitably outraged metaphor:)
So the NSA and FBI want to consideration for wire tapping built into INTERnet protocols/devices? Ummm what about the INTER part.. these are united states organisations that do not have international juristiction.. I don't care what they want to be able to do and I certainly don't want them influencing the design of facilities that I, as a non US internet user, will be making use of.
One of the holes scientists seem to fall into is to forget that exceptions to rules might be indicators that the theory is flawed and not that the theory just has some exceptions. If a theory comes out that wraps up both the already accounted for behaviour of a system and the bits that aren't accounted for then it surely deserves to be considered, even if it does fly in the face of convention.
But if you then require guards to go about your daily life then you arent all the free. of course people have to face the consequences of expressing their opinions in public, but the public rarely responds by playing the ball.. they usually play the man.. often hard...
