  1. Propaganda much? on Various *nix OSes Open To Format String Attacks · · Score: 1

The more I listen to various 'tech news leaders', the more I start to see a pattern. Whereas Microsoft's bugs are either not publicized, ignored, or explained away (the ILOVEYOU virus comes to mind...how come no one mentioned that it was an M$ OUTLOOK/Outlook Express/Exchange VULNERABILITY that allowed the virus to propagate?), the various *nix's "bugs" are put under a Microsof^H^Hcope. It sounds like a case of "Don't mind us...look over there!" to me. This is such a basic principle of OS design...ALL OS design...that it doesn't even deserve to be mentioned. Makes me wonder why it WAS brought up.

I thought it was just me that happened to! I had to (B)ack up in my browser to find it again...hmmm..Slashcode bug?

  3. This is definitely a good thing... on KDE 2 To Be Included In Debian · · Score: 3

I know all the GNOME vs. KDE arguments, and trust me I've been a big GNOME supporter, but as of later, KDE has definitely been coming into it's own (open-sourcing Qt).

Plus, I'm looking forward to getting ahold of Magellan! :)

Hey guys, keep in mind that part of what we love about Linux is the fact that we have a CHOICE. That choice should definitely extend to the GUI we use, whether you agree with their politics or not.

  4. Tax everything related, hmm? on Have You Paid Your Bertelsmann Tax Today? · · Score: 1

wtf? So, (and correct me if I'm wrong...) BMG is lobbying to get a tax slapped on all computer hardware why? Because it might possibly be used in piracy, and they want to make sure that the artists^H^H^H^H^H^H^Halready-wealthy executives get their share?

Next they'll be dipping their beaks into programming classes which might possibly teach people how to circumvent encryption. Hope they don't find out about O'Reilly's MP3:The Definitive Guide.

  5. Jeesh... on Judge Conflicted Interest in MPAA/2600 DeCSS Case? · · Score: 1

Little by little, the RIAA and MPAA are revealing their vast network of connections in- and out- side of the entertainment industry. I wonder how long it'll be before people realize that these particular SIGs have amassed quite a bit of power?

  7. Re:Metallica Chat... on Metallica's "Justice" And Napster · · Score: 1

"Dr. Bates went on to say, "This free flow of information and ideas must stop! Free apps like Napster and free OSs like Linux must be purged from all Internet-connected computers! They are to blame for DDoS attacks AND massive piracy of music that should...no...MUST be paid for!" By the way, Slashdotters...when did the definition of piracy equal "Giving copyrighted material away free of charge". When I make a mix tape of songs for my girlfriend, am I committing copyright infringement? Should I be charging her per song on the tape, as well as cost and materials of making the tape? And I'm sure I should be sending each artist a percentage of the profit.... Give me a fscking break. All Napster does is make easier something that's been going on forever..."Hey, listen to this song! Will you dub this for me?" Digital or otherwise, it's not illegal unless you are profiting from copyrighted material. Am I wrong?
