  1. Re:My Thoughts on Apple's Aperture Reviewed · · Score: 4, Informative

    a) does Aperture support layers?

not in the sense that photoshop does. what exactly are you looking for here? this isn't a photoshop replacement, by any stretch of the imagination.

    b) does Aperture have a clone tool/healing brush/patch tool? These are the tools I use most often for actual retouching.

it does. there is a simple spot/patch tool in the toolbar (check here). there is also a simple red-eye reduction tool that appears to work a bit better than the iPhoto equivalent.

    c) does Aperture support 16 bit images? (My guess is it would pretty much have to in order to truly support RAW, but I don't think they specifically say it does anywhere.)

    your guess would be right.

i've posted a mini-review over at macnn, but i haven't tested the raw conversion to look for the same issues that the ars reviewer found. overall application speed is something that apple addresses quickly, in my experience. i wouldn't be surprised to see a point upgrade for this app in a month or two.

CT's comment about available GC units versus XBox systems is also dependent upon the area you live in. I live near a college town in California and both systems have been sold out since they arrived. Things may be different in a quiet town in Montana (not that I know anything about Montana...except that it's flat..right?).

So the lesson for the day is: don't assume, because there are still systems on the shelf, that it's less in (general) demand than the competitor. One should always take supply and local demand into account. Oooh, and a bunch of people order their systems online. That's not reflected in the "on the shelf" test.

  3. Re:God forbid someone look out for my child on Kmart To Card Buyers Of Violent Games · · Score: 5

It is your job to watch out for your child, not a retailer's. If you raise her well, with a relatively moral upbringing, then by the time she is interested in "inappropriate stuff", she'll be able to handle it or simply choose not to purchase it.

I find it somewhat amusing that people try to use age limiting ratings as such firm barrier against corruption. They assume that you restrict your child to certain material for 17 years of their life, and then suddenly they're mature enough to deal with it on their own when they hit that magic birthday (be it 13, 18, etc..). I don't know about you, but I don't recall a "sensitivity and impressionability" switch being turned over when I hit a certain age.

You can't expect your child not to be exposed to certain things in life. It just isn't a reasonable expectation. Instead of applauding retailers and perpetuating the American trend of transferable responsibility, perhaps people should sit down with their children and talk to them instead. Educate them on what is out there and what some of their choices are.

To get back on topic: even if a child does buy a game recommended for (M)ature audiences, shouldn't the parent be aware when it is being played. I don't know too many kids that buy ultra-violent/sexy games and then play them in the basement so their parents won't discover their devious side. But maybe I just don't know enough kids.
