I threatened my dad to stop fixing his laptop unless he switch to Linux. A few weeks later, he's running Kubuntu Edgy. It's been 3 months now and he can maintain his machine by himself and his need for computer support is almost gone. When he tells his friends and collegue he runs Linux, it sounds much less like a geek thing than when I do. Same thing for me. When I tell people about my dad in the sixties who can use Linux, it sounds like anybody can do it.
In conclusion: Threats, some training and support and let the user realize it by himself.
