  1. Perl and PHP Super Size Combo on Which CGI Language For Which Purpose? · · Score: 1

For one of the web sites that I work on, I have began using a Perl/PHP mix. One works well for some purposes, while the other helps out in other places.

I use Perl in places where string crunching or cron jobs are needed. Anything that interfaces with stored data are coded in Perl.

PHP is used to serve the pages, push the add banners, create framesets, etc. The HTML code
    is mostly coded in PHP.

There are a few items that I have to go back and recode for speed, but so far PHP is much faster than Perl for creating all the dynamic content pages on the site.

  2. Way Too Many!!! on Motorola Releases HA Linux · · Score: 2

    This craziness needs to stop!!

Now, I think it is great that Linux is coming out all over the place and runs on just about every CPU and architecture out there. However, all of these variant distro's are going to create serious impact on software development.

We see everyday on Freshmeat that this package or that package has been fixed to work with "Insert Distro Here". There is a fix for Debian this day, Red Hat on another, Slackware later on the second day. Talk about a nightmare for anyone who creates an app with a moderate amount of interest.

Just my 2 cents. Oh wait, my thoughts ain't worth even that much in the end.

  3. Heading in the right direction. on Brainstorming New Uses for a Mobile Processor · · Score: 2

It is finally nice to see some real ground breaking advancements come into the market.

The new Crusoe CPU will hopefully open up a whole new world of oppurtunities. Imagine, taking just about any OS out there and porting it to this new processor. Not only is it small, with low power consumption, but it can be upgraded at almost any time. Just think, fast , wearable computers that will have a decent batter life and won't singe the hair on your body.

Wireless communications are becoming more readily availble at lower costs every day. Speed in this area keeps increasing, is becoming more secure, and will hopefully be available almost everywhere in the near future.

We have optical storage media being created in the works that is not only fast, has a large capacity, and it will all fit on a credit card sized device.

We are entering into a "Golden Age"
    Behold the wonders...

Ah to work from home. The ultimate dream, well to some people that is. Now if I could just do it for my current job.

    Telecommuting WishList:
-Let me VPN in over my cable modem, or buy me a T1 you cheap bastards. While we are on the subject, why not make it a T3 so I can run my Quake3, Half-Life, and UT servers on. 8-)

-Also send in a work crew and build a cube for me in my house. You know, with the drab walls, the whiteboard, the crappy chair.

-Oh, and don't forget the phone. I like being woken up by calls at 2 in the morning because some web editor can't code HTML properly. Learn to code in HTML, not use that Fr0ntP@ge P.O.S.!!!

Ah, just think of the possibilities.

  5. No Downtime Here on Bringing E-Com Sites Down for Y2K? · · Score: 1

Out of both the sites that I SysAdmin and Webmaster for, neither of them are going offline for the New Year unless there is a technical issue. Like there isn't enough of those... 8-) We have already spent the time and the $$ to make sure that everything will be ok for the rollover. The sad thing is that the Y2K update patches caused one of the sites to go offline. The machine had not been rebooted in so long, one of the drives turned out to be corrupt. The fsck and re-mirror process took most of the day to complete. So far so good. To bad, I am on call for two jobs at the same time. 8-( Looks like I am up for a busy night. Anyone think it was a bad idea to give upper managament and executive staff my home phone number? Now I guess this means they get to bug me at 12:00:01 am just to see if things are running ok. Oh well... but at least it pays well. 8-)

I guess this is just a good time to be part of Expedia. They are getting slammed all over the place. Here is another lawsuit pending against them. http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/991116/bmt.html This is one over breach of contract regarding some of the data that Expedia provides to users.

  7. What about the little guy ?? on Trademark Cyberpiracy Prevention Act · · Score: 1

Ok, yeah I know that there are alot of people out there who are only in it for themselves. But what about the little guy? I own a small internet company and we have already been pursued by a major corporation for Trademark infringement. They got all upset when we registered another domain name to try and increase traffic to our site. Not only were the demands to hand over the domain name made then rename our site, and they threatened lawsuit. In the mean time we have also filed for our own Trademark. The thing is, will this be enough to keep us from having to pay up major $$ just because some moron in a robe decides we should. Not to mention that the major companies Trademark is only pending and has not been approved yet. Talk about a heaping load of that brown smelly stuff.
