  1. Good news for the consumer on AMD's Duron Slated For June · · Score: 3

Frankly, I don't care if AMD or Intel makes the faster/better/sexier chip, just as long as there is competition. If some other Lage Unnamed Corporation had more competition, it might turn out better software. As it is, the two chip makers are forcing each other to work harder to be better and cheaper, which can do nothing but good things for you and me when we go buy our next machine.

  2. Probably unsurpirsed on Corel - Inprise/Borland Merger Off · · Score: 1

Most of you were probably as unsurprised as I am about this. I don't have the link, but there was a story post 6 to 8 months ago (not on /.) about how the plan for the merger was going to end with Cowpland (sp?) in charge and how that would be a disaster. Having watched their stock price in the last couple of months, I would be shocked if ANYONE wanted to saddle themselves with this company and its policy of self-destruction.

  3. UI's and evaluations of them. on What Is Important In A User Interface? · · Score: 1

Jakob Nielsen put together the single best way to cover what constitutes an evaluation of an interface. I recommend strongly that each person developing any sort of system for anyone with any interface read it once.

  4. Re:Palm and Handhelds on Ask Jakob Nielsen Almost Anything · · Score: 1
You know, I just researched this. Most people responded poorly to colour handhelds (Canadian spelling, sorry). The reason? They felt the simplicity that made the Palm so nice was gone. Bascially, between the colour Palm and the black and white Palm, 90% wanted the black and white (some had issues with battery life).

The research we did indicates that Palms, cellphones and pages are converging into a single device. Not a sure thing, but users drooled at the concept of the usability of each in one device.

  5. Re:Simple brings the stupid on Simple Comprehensive Config Tools? · · Score: 3

To an extent, yes. A bimodal tool (addressing needs of the expert user and the new to the system) would be of value to the WHOLE Linux market. I realize that many folks have a bias that makes them feel that Linux would be best served by keeping it highly complex, but you restrict the usability of the OS by doing so. Consider something like Jakob Nielsen's usability heuristics, one of which states that you should support the new user with comprehensive assistance and an obvious interface, but also provide shortcuts to the advanced user. I beieve that there is room for both in the Linux community. Perhaps the resource for the new user could be an agent that could be a module to be compiled if selected, so that the new user has the help, and the experienced user could merely not install it. Just my 2 cents (Canadian, so that's about 1.6 cents US). Cadfael

  6. Micro$oft suits on First Class Action Suit for Microsoft · · Score: 1

I doubt anyone is surprised by this. The timing fits with the finding of fact. I am curious if there are a load of such suits waiting to see if this first round is going to be successful and then get after M$. As is mentioned by another poster, M$ does not have the cash to pay everyone, so I expect the big boys to come out fast and hard if this sort of action seems successful. Hope Bill put some cash under his mattress.
