There is a lot to this statement. First: How much do we need to make a living? Healthy Food, Clean Water, Shelter suited for the environment you live fuel to adjust to the environment. And I would dare to add Health Care to fix any unforeseen problems. However this is an important question that we as a society will need to figure out. As it will give us a baseline measure on how much is needed to function in society.
Second: Are your little projects creating value to society? If so you probably can get a business loan to turn it into a career, or find a company that is willing to hire you to work on similar type of projects.
Third: Your Pay doesn't equal your value. The amount of pay you get is roughly based on how Hard it is to replace your job combined with how many people need your services. A Trash Collector is more valuable to society then a Software Architect, or a manager of finance. However it is easier to find people who can do the work, so the pay is less. If you are a hard worker then that is an attribute that will make it harder for the company to replace, with a attribute they desire. However Hard work is only an attribute, not the only thing.
The idea of minimum wage (also Basic Income) isn't suppose to punish businesses, however support people who add value to society however Normal Supply and Demand rules would make their salary much lower then their value to society.
A few thing in a world where there is strong automation that I expect will need to be changed. 1. Kinder Bankruptcy laws. Being that most business fail after about a year. In an automated world there will be pressure for a lot of people to start their own businesses, because cheap and smart robots will allow them to compete against the big guys. However there is a lot of risk in this, and we can't punish people for taking the risk and failing. 2. Dealing with basic living conditions, while they need some sort of incentive to get up in the morning and get to work. Any person who is willing and able to work, should be able to support them self's. 3. Overall empowerment, we need everyone to feel empowered enough to go out take risks, without punishment from "The Man"
During its hay-day back in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Slashdot was a big name on the Tech-Blogs and many message boards were based on Slashcode. The user level moderation was a huge feature....
What happened? Well slashcode didn't really get as well updated compared to others, there was a big fight about a beta version (so its style and influence diminished) However I expect the nature of technology had changed, moving from personal big equipment. Large Desktop towers filled to the brim with the latest add-ins, having people hack devices. With people making big old New Economy Tech workers money. Where an upper middle class salary was given to anyone who could use export their Word Documents to HTML and call them a web-developer.
Then the bubble popped and the popular technology is too closed down to tinker with, and the ones who had survived have gotten more conservative with our money and bitter about the new technology. Thus moved Slashdot deeper into its current trollish area.
Diets especially tied to weight loss is not easy. There are a lot of factors. The primary one is the body evolved in an environment where a daily meal isn't insured, in short loosing weight is your bodies last ditch effort to survive. Then you have things like genetics, your gut biome, your environment, your physical activity level, additives in the food you eat, your food culture....
A lot of people go Calories In < Calories Burned as an easy solution. However to calculate this isn't so easy. Some things you eat the Calories are stored, other are used to energy and some are just pooped out. Then how much you burn is different too. If you are in starvation mode your body will try to save the calories as best it can. So there are way too many factors for an easy diet. I myself had lost 70lbs in about a year, it was tough, trying to keep it off is tough and near impossible.
I expect the biggest hit was Apple releasing the iPhone 8 at the same time. With the Same CPU, and wireless charging. The duel release of the 8 and X just canablized the X sales.
Lets be real here. It will take that long, just to get past the regulations after the technology is proven. Self Driving cars are used in a very limited conditions, A flying taxi, will be much further along... Unless they are just doing something with Single engine airplanes. Say someone with a Cessna license. Can make some cash giving personal flights. Then yea 5-10 years to get the legal mumbo jumbo work done.
Because if you do chances are you will get burned. Because such vendor will change or go out of business.
If you have to rely on a vendor, try to minimize its impact. Like I work in a Microsoft shop... That doesn't mean for me to go all hog into all the MS API's and use those special features, tempting they are. No you write your code in a way that porting to a different platform in case MS drops support is relatively easy.
Even if you are dealing with an Open Source product, unless you are willing to take the torch and ready to fully support it, a project can stagnate, or just never become popular, or some personally causes support to drive off into an other direction.
I am fine with Nuclear in theory, however it is too politicized so we can't have the proper regulations in place. Because otherwise you are a Greedy businessman, or a Liberal Hippy.
The banks will find ways to charge vendors and customer fees anyways. At least we have payment options (witch so far seem much more secure then the alternatives)
Why can't I use my Apple Device to send Cash to an Android User? Why do stores need to support each device separately?
While I ask the question, the answer is relatively simple. Each company wants to be the leader in the area, and wants their technology to win, so they don't need to pay royalties to the other.
Sometimes competition is good, other times it steps on each other and creates problems for the consumers that most just don't want to deal with.
Real environmentalist understand that everything comes at a trade off. Decisions of course of actions needs to be address the biggest overall harming problem, compared to the smaller over all ones.
Does mining have an environmental impact: Yes However the real questions are.... Is the Impact from mining less then the benefit from having EVs? Are there steps that can be taken to reduce the impact from mining? What are the costs and benefits from these steps?
We want simple solutions to complex problems. However all the simple solutions probably have been done, the low hanging fruit had been picked. We now need to work on the tough problems.
This means more then a Politicians stump speech targeted at an 8th grade education. Or just raising your hands and giving up because there isn't a win-win situation.
At least if lies are pointed out you can find the source.
However we are in a world were nearly all information cannot be trusted anymore. The validity of the information is up to our own sense, which is faulty, because our own bias true or not will be in affect.
I welcome news that challenges my world view, However if I cannot trust it (because other then truth they are pandering to other world views), I need to default back to my world view. I do not work in journalism, I don't have the time or resources to investigate every belief I have, and listening to the news and digging to find if it is true or not.
I use NPR as my primary news source, as I find it the most trustworthy, and they seem to be willing to report on their own errors. I am well aware their politics are left of center, but at least they put a good faith effort in showing the other side as well. But in today's world, who knows perhaps Fox News is actually a real source of truth, and my world view is completely screwed up, from being influenced by LiBeRaL MeDiA!
As an adult myself (who can be considered middle age) real life is complex, People with the authority to do things, lack the ability. People with the ability often are not given the authority. Big complex problems need to be expressed at an 8th grade education level, so the masses will get on board, otherwise they reject any idea they don't understand. There are a lot of things, it is complex, often unfair, and anything we do has limited impact on this.
So yes I like to go to the movies, watch people who more or less live a simple life style, in a world with an obvious bad guys (even if you can relate with them and are sympathetic.) and good guys with the Power and Ability to do something about it.
We don't have Tony Stark worry about going out and saving the day, because he will miss a meeting of an important contract which would cause him and his family to loose everything they own. Or Captain America having to figure out how to make ends meat after leaving shield as it closes down, he just finds an other organization or country to reside in.
I know it is fiction, however after watching it, I feel slightly more empowered, where I may just take that extra risk to bring me forward in life.
This stuff is for kids, but kids live in a world of possibilities, where the future has many options, so such shows opens up options to them. As an adult it brings that childhood like optimism back for a little bit.
It means we can no longer live in our little groups of like minded people. Nearly every portion of the world will need to deal with everyone else.
People in China needs to deal with Americans and Europeans. People in Africa need to deal with people from Asia... We can no longer afford to live in our little boxes.
Being that such a feature required Microsoft infrastructure to support. So they are slowly dismantling the Phone Infrastructure. Windows Phone 10, is probably still has enough users to keep it going. But if they can bring down a lot of the Push Notification servers and just meet the Windows 10 Phone user they should be OK. Where they can take their employees and move them elsewhere.
Without Power, your car will be rather dead in the water. The mirror will only serve you in knowing that you are inf act about to die, vs. hoping people will see your car had unexpectedly stopped in the highway.
For the case you car is about to die, chances are the cars electronics tend to still function long enough for you to get into a safe spot.
I am only saying this, because there are too many City Dwellers when listening to the issues that a Country Folk have being remote, their goto response is move to the city, Like it is the only choice, anything counter to that is just being a bad person.
My main expectation is that it will be better at blind spot detection, and adjust for bright lights better. Also it could consolidate all the mirrors so you are not craning your head to know what is going around.
That said, if it is anything like the rear view camera, it will need to be setup with a way to clean itself. One spray from the car next to you, you are SOL. while a mirror with a bigger surface area will usually be quite usable even if very dirty.
Microsoft is the nerdy kid, who doesn't embrace his nerdiness and tries to act cool, without realizing they are missing key components that makes cool kids cool. But like Microsoft Bing. after you go down that path it is difficult to go back (often because you had ditched all your nerdy friends)
Back in the 1990's Microsoft wasn't cool, however it was popular because it was one of the few companies that had what people wanted. After that had changed it was dropped because it was never a product that people wanted to use, but had to use.
There would be a profit made or lost by companies stealing others diversity planning. Diversity planning and policy isn't just a hippy feel good thing. It is about (especially in a time where there is an employment shortage) keeping and retaining skilled employees in your organization. If your organization has a reputation fairly or not, of not being diverse, there will be a lot of talent that will not apply, or worse talent who has been hired, to leave shortly after being hired, due to an unpleasant work environment.
For a professional career turnover cost an average of 150% their salary in a year to get a new employee and get them up and running. And each employee who is doing their job is normally an asset to the company who's overall value is greater then their salary, which allows the company to grow and prosper.
With the demographics of the world getting more diverse, good diversity planning is important, unless you want to get stuck and slowly die off.
If IBM had some good plan, they don't want Microsoft to take it from them, IBM spent a lot of resources to come up with such a plan, and it if it is working, it is giving IBM a competitive edge over Microsoft.
That being said, the issues for IBM vs Microsoft in diversity is a bit different. East Coast Companies tend to be overall better with diversity then West Coast companies.

No, However giving a trivia answer without explanation supports little to adding knowledge to the group.
Apparently you don't see the connection...
Don't feel bad, neither do I.

At $0.81 a Gigabyte that is still a lot. Especially being traditional drives are between $0.02 and $0.05 a Gigabyte
I hope these disks are more reliable then a Raid-5
