You may see more delays in the Open Source world, than in the commercial world, but I think is's a good sign. We keep our clear goals and do not compromise to keep a deadline. This means fewer problems in the future with necessary compabillity code to these 90% finished programs.
Still if you need the bleading edge - go for the snapshots.
Real Programmers know when their programs are in beta and when they are not.
I hope people concentrate om making plugins for not yet supported soundformats. Try to take a mp3 compressed song and turn the bass almost of. Then try the same with your original CD. No doubt the CD sound is richer. My point is. The sound effects only sounds good when the music isn't psycoacustic compressed like mp3.
Remember a while back, when DOSEMU needed a special kernel hack to get all the features ? Linus wouldn't put their hack into the kernel because he found the patch a bit dangerous. The patch later on became a special module, and later on again is wai incorporated into the kernel.
The same thing will happend this time.
The other tactic to GPL (or another opensource licence) the old version is also a well known tactic. Look at ghostscript and DOOM.
Beowulf like clusters become popular, Linux is
often used, but it have to compete with the large
and good old Unix suppliers. Take a look at:

Here you find a similar project, and even an
explanation why they didn't choose linux.
Seems like the commercial unices are running
out of time.

So don't be afraid. This is good for Linux.
