"I'm willing to bet that in China, a land where the government censors almost everything in sight, Orwell is banned."

I mentioned 1984 to a friend that lives in China and she has never heard of that book, or Orwell. So, yes, it is banned.

Recent news about IndieTorrents.com, an invite-only tracker that is pretty extensive as far as range and number of independent music etc, is shutting down. Planning a comeback, however.

    # 2008-04-12 - I have some sad news to announce to all of you. IT will be closing down on Sunday. We hope to rise from the ashes like a fiery phoenix some day in the future but for the time being our run of free hosting has come to an end. It has been a great ride and I have had so much fun doing this. I will miss this and think back with fond memories. Drink a tall glass of cold beer and say goodbye to your good friend drewcifer. -http://www.indietorrents.com/

But they've recently got $2000 in donations, so I think their return should definitely be expected.

I find waffles.fm & what.cd are other good invite-only sites for independent music torrents. I believe waffles is where most OiNK users went. Those invites are hard to come by, however. At least in my searches; which are still fruitless.

"Microsoft probably won't offer XP forever."

So, Microsoft isn't going to offer Windows XP in a few months. As far as an OEM license goes.

  4. WindizUpdate... on Windows XP Update Library On a CD · · Score: 5, Informative
    From the site:

    Why use WindizUpdate?

Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft, it will also keep software and drivers from other vendors updated. However, that functionality is currently missing.

    Good reasons to use WindizUpdate

            * No personally identifiable information is collected from your computer.
            * No more unwanted spyware -- Microsoft Internet Explorer can finally be removed from your computer (if that were possible).
            * It lists just the updates you need. If an update has been superceded by a newer one, it will not ask you to install the older one.
            * Using enhanced data from MBSA, WindizUpdate will find more security patches needed for your O/S than the "other" website.
            * If there is a security issue with a component that is not yet installed, it will not ask you to update it. For example, if you have not installed hyperterminal, it will not update it.
            * It is not restricted to just Microsoft products. Software from other vendors can also be updated.
            * Upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer is not considered a Critical Update!
            * Works on Windows versions no longer supported by Microsoft -- Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95
            * Our plugin is not an ActiveX control.
            * Integrated download manager with error detection -- you can cancel downloads at any time, and the next time you wish to install the cancelled update, it will continue from where it left off. Only corrupted sections of the file are redownloaded.

If you are still not convinced that WindizUpdate is the site for you, please check out our page titled "do we need to say any more?"

    Disadvantages

            * There is a delay from when new updates are released from Microsoft to when they appear on this site.
            * If you're using Internet Explorer, you will need to use Microsoft's Windows Update site for updates -- this site will be of no use to you.
            * You'll need to upgrade your browser if you're using MSIE 4.xx -- This site won't work, neither will Microsoft's. http://windizupdate.com/

Sure, it's not an AIO CD, but it's a great alternative to Windows Update.

  7. What the World Needs... on Smarter Teens Have Less Sex · · Score: 1

I have this friend I absolutely love, but she has some downright silly ideas.

Though incredibly bright, sometimes I wonder if she's actually thinking straight. Her world tends to revolve around sex and an inclination towards BDSM. (she didn't have the best childhood either, you could consider this a cause?). A few years ago in late High School, she had (and likely still has) the idea that the world needs a "Sexual Revolution". Involving mass amounts of sex everywhere, of course. Something about this is supposed to change our world for the better.

Not to mention the population increase, which I'm sure we don't need, I could imagine the rise in STDs wouldn't be so pleasant either. And now, we could all become severely stupid? Oh noes.

    Well, intelligent too, but...
Any word if more sex makes you have crazy concepts that don't really make much sense? I'd like to know if our Government gets laid more than Ron Jeremy ;)

This is incredibly true. I was doing tons of classwork on a 600Mhz machine running XP just fine. I got an upgrade to a 700Mhz computer with 512mb RAM which I overclocked to 812Mhz, which runs Ubuntu quite nicely. I also have an older Compaq desktop, P4 1.8Ghz 256mb RAM :(, that I do not touch, really. Once I get some RAM I'm sure I will though. All I have on that is XP for now, and the RAM really cripples that. If I had room on thag 40GB hard drive, I'd likely put on Ubuntu. What I can't seem to understand is why my old Compaq laptop, running a P3 700Mhz with 320mb RAM, runs XP damn perfect. It is actually quicker than the Ubuntu installation on the other partition. And as far as Open Office goes, I can't see much of a reason to use otherwise. As far as student use goes, it accomplishes everything and it does it well.
