The two choices are: populate the galaxy/universe or become extinct. Staying on the earth will ultimately lead to extinction when the Sun dies, if not before. We need to reduce our risk of extinction by spreading the risk over many planets.
Say we seed another planet with humans. That planet's inhabitants will then evolve into a completely different animal. Inevitably, Earth's inhabitants will all die off. Haven't we still gone extinct? Populating the universe doesn't secure our species existence.
