The big schools, such as Carnegie Mellon and Champagne Urbana, have dozens. There are thousands of universities, and research institutions. The United States is the global leader in CS research (says me, a European), it cant be pulled of with 1000 PhD candidates. Maybe its true, but I urge caution in believing that statistic.
