As soon as I can build my own product that isn't designed to fail in 5 years, I can get out of the consumerism loop that manufacturers today have me in. When durable items are truly durable, we can build one and then pass it on to the next generation.
I'm actually surprised that we haven't developed synthetic blood before now. We've known about blood types for 100 years and I keep expecting to see a machine producing blood cells in the news any day now.
Provided with the proper nutrients couldn't we keep a cell alive and dividing to have an unlimited supply?
Something I didn't know before that I learned from the article: Anyone can receive type O blood without risk.
It also seems to me that that this finding illustrates the difference between socialized nations and the USA. I wonder if the politics, tax structure, and priorities over the last 20 years has a hand in this finding.

Looking at it objectively, shouldn't most of the basic research that NASA has taken on over the years belong under the NSF budget and program office?
It seems to me that Science and Innovation belong to the National Science Foundation.
National Aeronautics and Space Agency should focus exclusively on applying science developed elsewhere to advance Aeronautics or Space applications.
Isn't the biggest need in the developing world clean water?
