You're right about the US party system, unfortunately it is so deeply embedded in our society that it may never go. We've never had a 3rd party that was a contender. So, what's the solution? Maybe we have to work on changing a party, albeit on a smaller scale. Check out http://www.freestateproject.org/.
On topic, I too thought McCain was a viable candidate, but not any longer. Keep gov't away from the Internet and our rights.
