You are neglecting profit. 100m in revenue is quite likely not to cover the many costs associated with launching, and maintaining a high profile device.
If I had to make a guess I would say the nanos are doing well, and the touches are prob. similar (up a little?, they are cheaper now) to last year, where I think the big losses are are in the Classic, which Apple has left for dead it seems, despite being most likely its most profitable model since there alike zero R&D, marketing, ect.
You are right profit is the end line, but you are forgetting that there is a lot more cost to create something than just manufacturing. Certainly they are not losing money on production, but what about software, advertising, store placement (kiosks, endcaps, ect.), design, and overhead (officespace, employee benefits) Of course I cannot say if they are making a profit or not, but it seems likely they are not.
I would die for an iPhone with a HD, yes I know it would be a tad fatter, and yes I know it would be (slightly) more likely to break, though HDs seem to have gotten more durable since my 2G iPod.
I agree, this seems to be a growing problem. These companies seem to have little incentive to protect us, so perhaps they need a disincentive to let our data get stolen. I think it should be indexed to the number of accounts compromised and also increase with every violation. It is just criminal that these companies have next to zero accountability to protect their customers.
It probably will, but I think the sentiment is that he can just keep using XP and the current (final) version, no need to upgrade since he doesn't use Windows for anything else.
Well perhaps they are gathering this information to try and determine what their users most commonly do, so that they can be more focused with new features. That seems like it is a positive to me.
By paying my due I meant that I will download as a trial, but if I keep it I pay. Technically is against the law, but I think it is morally OK. At for your statement about using atomic compilers, fine go ahead, I would rather spend the $30 than wait for that to be coat effective. Also what will you dupe if nobody makes anything anymore? The same Chevy from before the engineers quit bothering?
Considering the fact that Youtube takes all DMCA violations without investigation how will they handle these new ad requests? I mean will they really investigate if I send them a letter saying I own the rights to CSI and demand they post my ads? I would be pretty annoyed if they bend over backwards to make sure that doesn't happen, while at the same time banning users who posted material that was accidently DMCAed by a major corp. On the other hand if they don't filter these requests it could be pandemonium with everybody claiming the rights (and revenue) to every clip on the planet.
I was using common terminology, I realize you are not "stealing". You are just depriving the owner of profits. Perhaps you would have never bought it it at all, but I wouldn't be proud of the habit. BT is great for trials, or getting lossless versions of songs you already bought, or Linux distros. But straight up long term use of pirated
(another imperfect term) software is not good for our industry. I download tons of stuff against the "law" but I am certain to observe the moral law of paying my due.
Spore was fine, but seriously not worth the hype. I enjoyed it, but compared to some of the other Will Wright concepts it is seriously lacking. And no, I'm not talking about the DRM. Spore is a good start, but I hope Will has more up his sleave.
Yeah dickish to reply to one's own post, but let me remind folks that Flash on the Mac, just like Linux is a disaster, Silverlight is also an afterthought. I didn't mean to suggest that Apple is altruistic, but they are smart, and with the way that these 3-rd party plugins work, I don't blame them for saying fuck off.
I think it is a little less sinister than you think. Apple has a lot to gain from avoiding highly proprietary stuff on the web. Yes I know H.264 is not OSS, but compared to Flash or Silverlight it is certainly more accessible. Apple has a lot to gain from avoiding an Adobe or MS powered web. Despite the recent Apple hate, they are certainly better off with a more open web than the web of 2002.
I don't steal software, ever, but it is a well known fact (among Mac users) that iWork can be downloaded direct from Apple. All it takes is a valid serial number and you are ready to go. Why the heck would anybody bother firing up a torrent?
Yeah but while I know Keith is a lefty, he also seems intelligent. Wallace just a few days ago was questioning if Obama was actually president because Roberts flubbed the oath. I know that the constitution dictates the presidency shifts at noon, there is no a excuse for someone who is labeled a journalist not to. Unless of course they are choosing to hype up their audience and spread FUD.
Yeah and the media and "everyman" called her a lefty nut. Just shows how people's ideologies can obfuscate their critical thinking. I mean if Bush had the power to do it, with no checks and balances, why not? (from his POV). I'm just glad that it seems that this wiretapping wasn't done to effect the outcome of the elections. This stuff is scary, really fucking scary.
You just illustrated a point that I think was forgotten by folks in the last presidency. There seemed to be an idea that their ideology would reign supreme for eternity, and so any skirting of the law would be a way of forwarding their agenda. Oh course they failed to remember that their constitutional erosions will stay in place long after they have gone. Suddenly the left is in control of a massive overreaching government who can spy on us at will (and take us a torture us). The only hope we have is that Obama is what he says he is and willing to roll back his own power. In the end I wish that we didn't have to trust anyone to do that, and hadn't broken it in the first place. A good president understands he and his allies will not always be in power, and acts accordingly. That is the balance that is supposed to help keep our executive branch in check.
Looking at his post history, I think perhaps he has the worst karma on all of Slashdot, and not that isn't stalking its being informed. Which he clearly is not, on a wide range of issues.

well it didn't take him long to regret that tat.

You do realize the iPod is on par cost with the Zune right?

I think you wave that right when you choose to upload to YouTube and abide by their ToS.

Totally agreed, good game, but nothing like it could have been.

Well yes, because Apple licensed it to them. Big mistake.
Yeah seriously, I often get karma assraped just for pointing out that MS is a monopoly.

Just ignore this guy people, I mean look at his comments page, almost totally full of trolls. With such a low UID he has been being a dick for years.
