  2. Should the DOJ get involved? on Transmeta And AMD To Hook Up? · · Score: 2

If the nature of the patent-swap is "You take the low-end & mobiles, I'll take the desktop & servers" then doesn't this amount to an alliance that threatens competition?

On second thought, if they didn't go after Intel, then it's not likely...

I believe Intel is into Rambus to the tune of about $400M in a stock-swap deal.

Something else of interest...I have heard that Rambus is (based on head-count) an IP law firm, rather than an engineering shop. Comments?

  6. This is Excellent News for OEMs looking at AMD on Yet Another K6 Series From AMD · · Score: 4

I work for an OEM, and one of the internal arguments against AMD is that they have no equivalent to Intel's Embedded Systems Group. Under this program, Intel designates certain products (CPUs, Chipsets, etc.) to be supported for at least five years.

Many folks designing embedded systems have platform-sensitive applications, and will not design products around platforms whose product lifespans are measured in months.

The extension of the K6 line brings its total life to nearly 3 years (and counting). This effectively removes the primary argument against AMD for embedded system development.

I agree. I rarely even read the comments to Katz articles anymore, as so much are in the form "Me too!" or "There he goes again."

That such venom could exist for a single author never ceases to amaze. Regardless of how one feels about the topic/content of Katz's writing, it is important to remain objective.

  9. Here's Why: on Why Do We Still Use Gasoline? · · Score: 1

    1. Power/Mass: Gasoline has a high co-efficient of potential energy per its volume & mass
    2. Cost: Despite recent events, Gasoline and its derivatives (Diesel) are still very inexpensive
    3. Distriubution Infrastructure: You can buy gasoline safely almost anywhere. There are agencies to regulate the purity, measurement and safety of each distribution station.

Note that many alternative fuels have promise, but lack in one or more of these areas. Electricity is cheap and available (2 & 3), but the power/mass ratio sucks with current battery technology. (1) Hydrogen has plenty of power and would be cheap (1 & 2), but lacks an available & safe storage & distribution system.

I'm holding out for hydrogen and natural gas, but here in Iowa we're doing just fine on high-percentage Ethanol blends. If you've ever been here, you know the entire state is covered in corn, and that makes for a plentiful, renewable and clean fuel alternative. J.

  10. Re:The internet isn't made for voice calls. on Cross-Platform Internet Telephony? · · Score: 1

Agreed. The Internet (Captial "I") can't cut the mustard in terms of QoS. Right now, the real advantage of VoIP is to offload high-traffic circuits onto a dedicated IP link. Think of a company linking multiple branch offices over dedicated pipes. I've used many 1.55Mbs T1's carrying dozens of conversations at CDMA quality or better.

  11. Please explain "Professional Musician" on MP3: On Artist Protection And Copy Protection · · Score: 2

In the not-so-distant past, even the most popular musicians and artists held full-time jobs, creating music simply to express their own passions and creative juices. The wealthy, full-time rock star is a by-product of the age of recorded music, a creation of (major and independant) the Recording Industry.(tm)

Opening the music distribution system (Napster, Gnutella) is simply taking down the tollbooths on the highway. Quit trying to find a convoluted model for a revenue stream, because there isn't one. Instead, re-evaluate why you decided to make music in the first place, and what you hope to acheive with your art.

Similar plan was developed by the Dept. of Transportation to clear a mountian and make way for a freeway in California during the '50s.

Didn't pan out, but this was all part of the "Atoms for Peace" program of the Eisenhower administration. The long-term environmental effects of nukes were unknown, and the thinking of the day was they could be useful tools in large scale mining/earthworks projects.

  14. VoIP for LANs on Cisco's IP Phones - Seven Digits And Cat5 · · Score: 3

My company has been involved in VoIP for nearly 5 years, and while it is extremely sensitive to latency, the response-time and bandwidth for a single full-duplex call has decreased about 10-fold in recent years.

Maybe it's not ready to replace the PSTN yet, but would be ideal for a LAN PBX.

AFAIK, however, there are still some interoperability issues to be ironed out, pertaining to call transfering, multi-party conferencing and other call management features. Still, this is way cool, and brings us one step closer to packet-switched network.
