I am not a smart man so forgive me if I missed something. I see in the interview that Mr Shamoon admits that this new technology does nothing about the Millions of downloadable songs out available already. That being the case what is to encourage users to and song traders to switch over to the new format? If i intend to make MP3s(or whatever its replacement is) to trade to my friends why on earth would i not just use a piece of software that left out the watermarks? what motivation do i have to switch format? this does not eliminate the problem it just takes it out of the spotlite and pushes it underground where it was before Napster. it may stop Joe Luser but the folks who are really into this will continue unabated. thats just my opinion, i may be wrong.
Of course until that time it is the perfect way the government to monitor email trafic. with no 3rd party having to agree to implement monitor software on their server it would be very easy and secret.
They should know better. I know more than a few people who have been screwed by Record Cos. All that the Cos are looking for is the Next Big Thing, they dont give a damn about the artist, until they are in court decrying the fact that no one can exploit artists but them. Why do you think that so many bands come and go so fast? After the hype surrounding the NBT artists first album (read one hit) dies off so does the intrest from the company. If a band signs a contract on the basis of a self funded album, the Co has it re-recorded with a more "consumer friendly" feel to it. "we like your music, we want you on our label. sign here" "COOL!" "but... it isnt suitable for mass consumption so you will have to change it a bit." "a bit?" "well, completely. something suitable for TV movies and advertisments"
corporatism is the enemy of true creativity and freedom.
is that it is still the best thing available for linux. All of the other options out there are incomplete and just as buggy. Prove me wrong, please. I just started using Netscape6 beta for Linux and so far have been very happy, it is faster, more stable, and is not (as much of a ) memory hog. one day it may even be finished...
so what?! just cause the guy isnt using it for anything useful it should be taken away? So someoneelse can put something useful (profitable) there? That is rediculous. I have a car that i have not driven in a month, should it now be up for grabs? some homeless guy could get much better use out of it than me so he should be given the ownership? I dont understand the logic behind this.I currently own 2 URLs that i dont do anything important with, shoulkd they immediately be turned back over to some gverning body who can give them to Disney Corp or other BigCompany that has a branch of their business with a similar name. I know i am ranting but that is because i am mad about this. I would be SCREAMING if this had happened to me. I am going to go use the punchng bag here in a minute just to release a bit....
User can already do this kind of on the fly hyperlinking in a web page. Flyswatter is a piece of software that comes with neoplanet and does this to every page you visit (if you have it turned on, personally I found it quite annoying).). So, anyone who really wanted this "service" could get it on their own without Deja having a hand in it. this is more a bother to me than evil, unless they are linking to people that *pay* to be on the list of linked sites. "Talking about video cards? Check out BrandEX site!" "What about BrandB?" "Oh, they didnt pay to be on the list so we arent interested in helping them." that is the only danger I see.
I cant stand it when the ATM beeps at me to remove my card (which I have already done since I *can* anticipate its next move). I refuse to use such helpful programs as Office and Outlook (or are they the same thing now?) because of the multitude of features that do nothing but distract me from what I am trying to get done. When I made the move from the MS world to *NIX it was a bit confusing, but the discovery of simple tools that did what I need with no bells and whistles (literaly!) made it all worth while. I am just glad that I now work in an environment that has whole heartedly embraced Linux/Solaris for its development and desktop platform. There are still many Windows users here but slowly but surely all documents are being converted from MS formats to open ones. Now all I need to do is demote the Exchange server....
This article is from Oct last year so it is a little dated. If you assume that any of it was ever true (other than the defenition) then it is quite amazing how far Linux has come in a few short months. http://www.microsoft.com/NTServer/nts/news/msnw/ LinuxMyths.asp
AGP power problems existed for the p2/3 line as well. Specificly with the Compaq presario series of machines. When the RivaTNT was first released it would not work in the Compaq machine because of the power deficiancy. This created quite a headache for me as I was working for a game developer at the time who had rented 15 or so Compaq computers and bought TNT cards for a demo they were doing. Imagine my displeasure when none of it worked as planned just a few days before the event.
This is very cool and I would love to see it pan out for the same reason others would, this place is becoming quite crowded. To paraphrase Lazarus Long "Anyplace that you need a ID card to prove who you are is too crowded and too oppressive." For anyone interested in this sort of thing (and most geeks are) visit the Living Universe Foundation @ www.luf.org The make some good points about where to start this ball rolling. Is manking really ready for the difficulies of space-life when we have yet to populate 2/3 of this planet? The seas would be a great training ground (so to speak)
It SHOULD just remove redundant sounds but even IF it did that perfectly it still removes overtones from the music that gives it a slightly more canned feel. I feel the same way about CDvsVinyl though. A true analog recording still produces a better sound than a sampling digital recording. That stated, MP3s are way easier to store than my record collection and in my car or at a party the ambient noise makes the formats near indistinguishable.
This comment is redundant. just a warning. This MP3 mania is madness. The media histeria that revolves around the (relatively) insignificant event of downloading musicis nuts. The software instry has survived in the face of overwhelming piracy for decades and the Music industry has been through this before as well. Does the act of downloading Brittny Spears latest single really an act worthy of a jail sentence? Perhaps it is, but not for the reasons put forth by the RIAA:) People constantly make the argument that the exposure to previously unheard bands prompts them to go buy the album of said band, and I agree for the casual pirate this is true. It is in my case. This is an opportunity for artists and record companies to latch on to a new music medium and make MORE money. They are mad to turn their backs on it. Lars U. was correct in his assessment of the situation if a bit narrow of vision. vinyl still sounds better that CD or MP3
sorry if i made no sense i have a swelling itching brain. just go ahead and moderate me into oblivion...
Sorry to rain on your parade Jon, but thus far the friends I have at Ford have heard nothing since the initial announcement. My brother and many of his friends work for various branches of Ford and Ford Motor Credit (not just cogs either) and not a one of them has a new machine on his desk courtesy of Ford. My bro was quite excited at the prospect of replacing the P120 I gave him 2yrs ago with something brand spankin' new but he is still waiting. I dont know what Fords original timeline was for getting these to employees but they sure seem to be dragging their collective feet. It was a great PR move and a wonderful idea/nice thing to do, but until something solid materializes, it is just Vapor...
I believe that you are missing the point. The features that you speak of most likely CAN be developed using OpenGL. The problem is that the time that they would need to invest in making this possible means that they spend way more money on development when a perfectly viable (from there perspective) option already exists. Would that be sound business sense? I beleve that the levereging that M$ did with the the whole directx package is both terrible and brilliant at the same time. The made development of softwares for their platform easier and cost effective while making porting of those games to competative platforms difficult and expensive. It was a very effective strategy. The only effective cures for this are a> release of the directx APIs for all to use or b> development of an Open Source alternative. Even if such a thing was not adopted by Win32 developers it could make the port much simpler if it had equivalent functions that could be substituted for the DirectX ones. my 2 cents

Didnt I see this exact same plot in a Bond Movie?:) On the serious side though, I recomend that anyone who is worried about giant media corporations read an old book, "The Media Monopoly" by Ben Bagdikian (not sure of the spelling). It is a bit out of date but the points he makes about the dangers of media conglomoration are MORE relevant today than when he wrote it. NetNews may be the only thing that prevents news as a whole from turning into sesationalist commercial for whatever faceless giant is pulling the strings of their parent company. www.rain.org/~openmind/bagrevu.htm for a review of the book. Interestingly a Google search on "the media monopoly" turns up Microsoft's home page as its first entry:)
Up to this point i had been hoping for some sort of Mad Max scenario. Should anarchy rule after Y2K I know where my first road trip will be to should I survive. I beg you all to do the same, in case I should be set upon by bandits or wild dogs. For the sake of humanity, the must not live! "I favor a scorched earth tactic. Anything is preferable to domination by an Alien force." -mrsalty
While the question of Can vs Should is valid, it is also moot. Anything that can be done will be done, regardless of if it should be. Should we make Nuclear weapons? Does the answer to that question stop any sufficiantly advanced (and it isnt that complex) country from making their own? trying to stop it at this point is trying to put the djini back in the bottle. The best you can hope for at this point is to control it intelligently and even that is unlikely. -It is this courts ruling that Science must maintain a distance of 100yds from Relirion at all times.

The entire PC world has gone made for the highest speed piece of old tech available. Instead of Better, Faster, Stronger we have Newer (package), Faster (clock speed anyway) Flashier. I understand on a mony saving level, it is way easier for harware developers to revamp their already successful lines of products and in theory if the manufacturer saves some $ then so does Joe User. But how long can this go on? The 8086 is already almost 20 yrs old and still going strong with a bunch of add ons and improvements. What is needed is ome fundamental changes made to the way it is designed and screw backward compatability. That can be emulated:) Perhaps we will see something really new from Carusoe...
JMS is absolutly correct. While it is a more difficult position to enforce, it is way more beneficial to the community as a whole than a breakup. the release of propritary API and all future ones would allow ANYONE who wanted to make a compatable piece of software to compete in the marketplace. If M$ is simply broken up then the individual departments have to see the economic feasability of developing for smaller/startup OSs. How long would it be before M$-Office group would develop its products for BeOS? How long before some startup creates an Office compatable suite if the APIs are released? I think the answer is clear.
