Yeah, shell scripts are good, but I recommend going to lacie.com and downloading their one step backup software for OS/X -- which is freeware.
and... it retains your file permissions to boot. It doesn't offer compression, or advanced features, just copies to any removable or non-removable device. I fyou have an external FW you will love it.
