Private emulation servers (google wowemu or mangos) run off Python/C++ on Windows using mySQL for their data. If you run one of these servers which actually work quite well, you can see what a feat running one with 2000+ players must be.
The private servers should be distributed to WoW addicts as they remove any addiction instantly. I ran around as a warlock with plate armor and a thunderfury (for non WoW players those are all objects of desire) with 99 million health. But then that was kind of pointless as I could just type.die and the creature would die.
