I would poke around some of the N900 focused forums, they may already be capable of what you're looking for and if not someone may have figured out how to add it already.
i've usually said something along these lines:
- if you're interested, it's easy to try with with a live cd and with someone who knows linux. ubuntu is a distribution i can recommend. if you (or your friend who knows linux) can get it to work with your computer, chances are you will want to stick to it. the hardware compatibility is usually the trickiest part, the rest is easy.
