  1. Cant even get the dB voltage to power linear right on Shannon's Theory Finally Broken · · Score: 1

If his -30dB is really a voltage ratio, then the power ratio is -60 dB. This of course makes the capacity even smaller than what he has with the his strange looking dB to linear calculation.

Not that I actually believe anything else on his page either. Tons of people have made similar claims and have later been proven incorrect.

  2. Re:bah on Is H.R.1907 Patent Reform that We Want? · · Score: 1

Who says that anyone has the fundamental right to be compensated for coming up with an idea "first"? Furthermore, the patent system was never intended to protect the "intellectual property" rights of patent owners. The purpose of patents was to foster innovation by promoting the spread of scientific ideas. Keep in mind we're talking turn of the century stuff here. The current reality of the patent system prohibits scientists and engineers from looking at patents for fear of tripling the damages in a subsequent infringement suit. What was the point of patents again?

A grassroots approach to stopping patents and their abuse is for the engineers (who now appear at the bottom of the food chain) to refuse to sign off on the patent application. If the employer doesn't like this, I'm sure there are other companies around looking for smart people with good ideas.

  3. Re:Kudos. on LinuxDVD CSS Decrypt - Source Available · · Score: 1

CSS is fundamentally flawed in many respects. It looks like something designed by an intern at IBM. Seriously there are things in there that simply make no sense from a cryptography perspective. I won't say anymore as this topic (copy protection) can be legally sensitive in some countries.

I think it's better that all the pieces are developed in parallel. Trying to architect all the pieces required into one project would be a huge mess. Additionally, we're not sure how it's all going to fit together so we'd be wasting our time.

On the subject of video codecs, I know of two people that are writing high performance video codecs from scratch. One of them is me, the other is a secret. Four months seems to be a reasonable target for the fruits of these efforts.
