  1. Re:Don't use a NAS device on What NAS To Buy? · · Score: 2, Informative

Take this from someone running 3PB of physical disk on a deduplicated backup environment, all on FC disk.

NAS has a place. NAS can be a fit, depending on performance expectations. If you looking to push 1GB/s sustained for 500 users, a NAS server with 4 spindles is not the right fit to meet those expectations. It will fit for an environment where you have 2 - 3 users, and need 5 - 10 MB/s.

For my home environmnet I use a QNAP ts-409pro, with 4X1TB drives in a RAID-5 config. I have a couple 750GB drives that I use to backup important data (some data is disposable). Local backups I just mir the data using robocopy. I use truecopy to encrypt a drive before using robocopy to mirror the data, then pass the data for a friend to store the drive in his safe 35 miles away.

I also have a 1tb drive in a raid-nothing config on the back of the TS-409pro, that I backup my desktops to, using Acronis. I dont keep data on my desktop, so it is mostly for just having the desktop image...

The TS-409 is a fully functioning server. It might have a slower processor, but mine has been rock solid for almost 6 months now. It does www, nfs, mysql, native ssh access, perl, windows AD, ftp, RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-5, RAID-6, JBOD, hot-swap drives, drive upgrades (replacing 500GB, upgrading to 750GB / 1TB drives),etc, etc.

RAID-10 is overkill for the home environment. Buy a USB drive, and back your crap up once a month.

LTO3 tapes are about $70 each, and I can put UP TO 1.6tb compressed on it. (Real number from my Spectra Logic T950 here at work. It is supposed to be 400gb / 800gb.) You can get a LTO3 drive off ebay for $2k. LTO4 is out now, with 800gb / 1.6tb. This disk might be too little / too late, or the start for a next gen home media. I would imagine that it could be a blueray / HD-DVD killer, and wound the consumer confidence in home theater media. I don't think anybody would initially take the new technology seriously for long term archival, without first proving them self for a while. They would have to have a backer like Imation to make this happen...

I personally use Netbackup to keep track of it in a catalog. Right now, My catalogs are over 900gb, from pushing about 700tb a month. Things are a bit different when you get to a large environment.

The "Backup Disk" was probably a raid 1 set, which most likely meant that the data was kept on a desktop. Most real servers should be set for raid 5 at the least. This a$$hat should be fired for having important data on a desktop, and not periodically verifying that the data was good.

Humans look at 9 planets in a solar system, and not very well mind you, and determine that life in the universe is unlikely? Who's to say that the Milky Way isnt 10% populated (1 habited planetary body per solar system)?

During WWII, the Jews and resistance used small firearms to upgrade to bigger guns. The small guns were a sickly thing that would barely shoot one shot. You were in deep schnit if you biffed up your trade up program. The smaller guns were then given to someone else to do a trade up program. While the US government has a bunch of cool guns, there are too many guns to get full removal of guns in a short period of time. This is why gun laws are nickel and diming gun rights. My guns will keep me immediately safe from an intruder, instead of waiting 10 - 30 minutes for a cop to come. My state, Minnesota, allows Concealed Carry. If your state doesn't, you are in the minority. We live in the communication age. Any blockage to communication would have to happen in the form of country wide power outages. If some freaky stuff was going on, you would get massive amounts of phone calls and emails. Case in point: 9/11. No news sites on the net, and all my information came from emails with pics from people in NY and phone calls. I couldnt get to a TV for a few hours. Registering a blog with 500+ followers isnt going to kill any important messages.

I have to be careful of what features I put on my gun to keep from going to jail. These used to include flash hiders and bayonet lugs, magazines, short barrels, and collapsible stocks. Why shouldn't the 1st amendment have the same restrictions? It wont be that much harder to register before you post, and will make the country a safer place. Why are you so resistant to this idea? If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't have any problem...
