  1. Re:Rockmelt on Is Facebook Going To Buy Opera? · · Score: 2

Thats because Rockmet uses Chromium. They simply added a couple of "plug-ins" to allow facebook, twitter integration. Best part, they managed to get $40 million in investment. Go figure. http://techcrunch.com/2011/12/19/rockmelt-vs-chrome/. As far as data collection, a small start-up, entering a cut-throat browser market, with facebook and twitter logins isn't going to collect anything?

I don't think it has the latest and greatess web 2.0 fancy features. But it does what I need it to do. I have been using www.yuniti.com for a while and thought there aren't alot of people on there. I have gotten my family and close friends on there, which has allowed me to share photos and stories with them quite easily. There are some things that are lacking ofcouse, but like i said gets the job done. I think other sites have this (I haven't used anything else in a long time). but it lets me break up my connections into groups. So, i can share certain info with certain people and not with others. Might be worth checking out.

I have to agree with the post. I have been using free version of TeamViewer with my mom, dad, sister and niece. It works like a charm every time. And, with their Quick Support link, it makes it super easy for people who are not very computer savvy to get started -- http://www.teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewerQS.exe. The other great thing I like about it is that I never have to install it, I run the installer and choose the "run" option, and it leaves no footprint. Overall, great app!

I think an even better idea would be betwen LA and Las Vegas. You would def have more people doing that route than LA to San Fran. Granted the above post wa funny, but honestly throwing out some other ideas.

What a conicidence, just today i read a blog talking about a really cool new way we could do CAPTCHAS. The idea seems golden! I can't understand why something like this hasn't been tried. If google or this game creator were to try this, it would take a long time for computers to even come close to breaking this. Check out the blog http://www.yuniti.com/BetterCaptcha

It sure can smack of public relations excercise by YUNiTi. But, like all things, making guesses or assuming things can lead to bad nasty places. This may be completely out of context, but since this was metioned, why not delve in a little deeper. First a little background. YUNiTi has been developed solely by my brother and I, for the last two years. We feel there are so many useful things that networking sites could do to truly turn into a great tool, and yet they don't. They worry about things to keep people busy, like gifts, and "my status". Things you know are there to keep teens on their site all day and to keep their adds margin up. So, here we are the two of us, with a cool idea, with lots of weekend and nite hours put in. With no money to get the word out. So,we sent a few emails out to some publications, and the guys at SNL found it an intersing and notable site that had some potential. And he decided to write it about it. Its like you have a great cration, but you have no way of showing the world. So, i ask this of the slashdot comunity? How do you get something out you've spend so much time and truly belive in?

  10. Re:"Unavoidable phenomenon" on Social Networks At A Crossroads · · Score: 1

It's funny how many comments I'm reading on here about "social networks are BAD". I think people are focusing on the wrong aspects of them. Its not something to keep you busy, or to spend time of instead of spending time with friends. Its really just a great tool. It would be like saying, "oh I really hate e-mail, why should i use it when i can just go the persons house and talk to them directly" A comment like that today would seem ridiculous. But that is what I'm hearing from all these negative comments. I for one thing networking sites are a great TOOL. I can keep in touch with friends and family all over the world (i was born and lived many years in brasil, meaning its great for me to keep in touch with those that live that), I don't have to worry about sending new pictures or some important news to all my friends. I simply update my profile, and my friends get notified something new happened right away, I can find and keep in touch with people that i lost touch with say back in high school or college... and many others. Anyway, the key here is that social networking sites should be looked upon as a tool, not as a site to see how cool you are because you have 10000 friends, or if you have 1000 gifts or presents.

  11. Backward Steps on Eolas vs. Microsoft Lawsuit Settled and Sealed · · Score: 1

The US needs to do something about patents laws! If I'm not mistaken Vonage is still in trial with Verizon, now this Microsoft thing, and I'm sure others out there. It's gotten to a point where patents are holding technology back. Technology should never be held back by bureaucracy. But unfortunately that is where we are headed. Simply put, our patent system is quite sad, and yet another example of how the mighty USA is falling behind and in essence shooting itself in the foot.

But i never understand why these big sites fail to make simple solutions to help and promote a safe site for its users. This is may be pure shameless advertising... but our lil site yuniti.com allows users to watermark their pictures. Yeah... you dont get to see the full image, but isnt the whole point of these picture sites a place to have users share their images?? and not to sell their photos online?? Anyway, programming wise its a one day featuere... seems so simple.. and would avoid so many problems...

Yeah... I thought 12 was too young to have a cell phone. Until my cousin (11) got one this last christmas. The reason he wanted, "everyone at school has one" ( including his 13 year old sister, that has had one for a year already). Both go to a public school, and live in a little apartment. The thing is that its become relatively cheap. You get a phone for 50 bucks, then you can add an aditional line to a family plan for 9 bucks. I'm not exactly sure what a 11 year needs a cell for. But the reality is that its happening all over. I guess the benefit is that its easier for parents to get a hold of kids. If thats any consolation...
