If you've got a broad range of experience accross a variety of fields I'd personally say your best bet isn't to give up 90% of your knowledge and try to focus on one area but to istead consider something that wants you to know abit about everything but doesn't need you to be specialised.
A consultant for instance will go into the company and give them overall IT information and what they need to do with some technical details but people will not expect him to get down and debug and fine tune the DB - they leave that to the DB who just then acts on the recommendations of the consultant.
The other thing is that something like consultancy gives you alot more people interaction, company dinners, trips, etc than just being stuck behind a desk as a DBA or programmer.
I've mainly focussed on sys admin type work previously but am now sliding into consultancy and am already noticing the huge improvement. I've had 2 overseas business trips - both of which I extended and turned into a free holiday for me right after the trip and I get to expense a hell of a lot more stuff now and actually get 'perks' to the job - something a sys admin / dba type will rarely get.
I already have fucked off - had enough of the BS in the UK - used to be proud of my country, now barely consider it my country with the goverment thats there. Living in Australia now and although it's americas little bitch and I hate america, lets face it - the UK has been bending over for america for so long I barely feel the difference in that regard. Long live the queen, go rot in hell Blair and please take your gay lover, Bush with you!!
Fully ashamed of the goverment and all its recent policies.
Some say the war in Iraq and the twin towers was all a scam to get oil, I personally am not into all the conspiracy theories but I sure as hell believe they are using it to milk every last bit of power, control and monitoring.
How much respect do I have for the current goverment? well put it this way - I wouldn't stop Guy Fawkes if he was around now and tried to blow them up. Sure people would die and I feel sorry for their families, but far less people than have died in Iraq and sometimes people have to die as sad as it is so we can keep our freedom and our rights - both of which are pretty much being fully erased with the current goverment.
Fuck them I think is probably a fairly polite, accurate description of my feelings towards them.
I really dont see how this is ever going to happen and I doubt it will.
Any guys good enough to support Linux properly will be quite computer literate. If they are they can be out there with decent jobs doing proper Linux support not sat at some 1st level helpdesk job.
Compare this to windows where you can take any idiot and teach them a very basic set of things that they run through with people and you just have two totally different situations which means two very different wages you have to pay people.
Windows support staff = dirt cheap.
Linx support staff = $$$$$
FINALLY!!
Now it'll be sooo easy to hack peoples important accounts.
You make a spoof page for something really irrelevant that no one cares about, they sign in without thinking twice because its not a site they are bothered about at all and BAM I suddenly can use that info to Login to their bank account where they would normally triple check the website address and where the bank has put 3000 security features.
I LOVE it!! Come on OpenID - I've been trying to figure out what I'd do to retire;)
Hope this proves to other companies that being Open Source and giving away your software for free can in the long run actually be profitable and make you many lovers along the way.
Been using mySQL for years and love it. It set the way for free databases for using for projects on webhosts world wide.
Good luck to it!!
