Unfortunately this doesn't change the manufacturers' required average fuel economy across their entire fleet (CAFE standards since that calculation is measured differently than what the EPA uses to put on the window sticker. EVERY car's fuel economy will go down, but this in no way is going to lead to a rise in fuel economy standards -- it's just appearances.
Also, does anyone else think it a bit silly that manufacturers advertise subcompacts as fuel efficient when they get an average of 30+ mpg (pre-EPA change)? Whereas in Europe cars AVERAGE 33 mpg? Manufacturers say that people don't want little fuel efficient cars over gas guzzling sedans, but honestly when the difference in economy is 30 mpg vs. 25 mpg it makes no difference!
Just a thought: it seems to me that many people who would likely buy a small, gas sipping car are the same cheapos (like me) who would keep their current car as long as they can. So they tend to buy fewer cars (and therefore fewer fuel-efficient cars) in general. Whereas the folks who don't care for gas mileage may buy gas guzzling cars more frequently...
And a gripe: Why do people keep using any dollar figure less than $3.00 for fuel estimates in comparing the recovery costs of hybrids? Gas prices have tripled in the past 8 years -- what makes people think that we will pay $2.60/gal for gas over the next 10 years? Take the bus! Tell your kids to bike to soccer practice! That's what I did as a kid, uphill both ways.
Best quote FTA: Children, she said, are not as sophisticated as adults and often show emotion through writing or pictures, which is what teachers should want because it is a safe outlet.
Whereas adults, being much more sophisticated than children, often show emotion through arresting children because it is a "safe" outlet.
Why is our society run by fear?!?!
What is it that causes people to prey on children in the first place? I think there should be more investigation into that.
Let's see: loneliness, insecurity, sexual dementia, abuse as a child, rejection by women, poor social skills, boredom, low self-esteem, failure to reach one's potential, social pariah...
Oh, this is hard. Let's just ban the internet. No internet = no online stalking.
A violent person when exposed to violent media will tend to act...wait for it...more violently!
Exactly. Violence and guns are not the cause of the problem, but rather are simply vehicles that reinforce a violent person's disposition. The root of this evil is that he has had this combination of personality traits (i.e. bottled up emotions, inability to communicate, introversion) and negative experiences that were not adequately addressed or followed up on. The correct answer is that he should have been treated long before this happened, and should have been reached out to in the specific way that could have made him a functioning member of society. But how could we have known? Everybody has some psychosis that can be triggered by some combination of events to manifest itself in a negative way (alcoholism, drugs, suicide, rampage). To do so, we would have to be genuinely concerned about the social development and mental stability of each and every person in this world! Now, there's a thought.
But then again most of us don't want to do that, or rather we have never developed the ability to do that. Most of us are either so absorbed with ourselves and our few loved ones, or feel so constrained by social or legal conventions that we just walk by when some significant issue arises. Regulating guns, violent games, and such comes about basically from our failure to provide the unique support that each individual needs. It's not ideal, but considering that only a very few people are willing to take responsibility for those who need help... it's the next best thing.
Guns don't kill people. People with guns kill people. You can fix the people issue or you can fix the gun, video games, movies, etc issue. And since we have been trying to fix the people issue since the dawn of time without much success...
They are not paying for college, their PARENTS are. I knew many college students that I would not consider adults in any sense of the word. Nowadays when even a college education is required to get any sort of decent career, of course you are going to admit a larger chunk of lazier, more immature kids. I would much rather have those students hand-held through college than have them (and heaven forbid, their offspring) be a burden on society for the next 60 years of their lives. Bravo to IIT Bombay for realizing that college is more than just getting a piece of rolled up paper.
I just wonder when they will turn the library into WoW or porn central.
the problem is that if/when Quigo gets significantly larger, then google's "masses of information" will only be for less popular sites, meaning its blind contextual ad placements will be worth much less.
It is only fair that large eBayers have to pay income taxes on what they make. They are not only competing against large retailers, but are also competing against small and medium sized brick-and-mortar stores (mom and pops!). We talk so much of free markets balancing itself, but by not collecting taxes (corporate rate of 35% of profits), this already gives ebayers a distinct advantage.
This article is NOT talking about the following:
Sales tax. TOTALLY different issue, and usually if you already paid sales tax on the item, then you don't need to charge it again.
Used stuff. For the most part you're selling it for less than you paid for it, so technically you haven't made any money.
Small guys. If I made $5,000 on ebay, I would have probably spent $3,000 on purchasing the items, and on top of that, now I can deduct the cost of my computer, driving to the post office, internet, home office, etc. So it's not like i'm being taxed on ALL of my revenues.
But what do I know, I'm just a pretend accountant.

We already have this... it's called Pretend To Be An Adult
