BobMcD, I concur that basically the clarinet really isn't being played very well.
Fundamentally, music can be modeled/thought-of as a highly-coordinated set of stimuli that act on a listener in a very wide variety of ways (see www.omsmodel.com for some specifics - over 100 high-level kinds of stimulation). When music is performed/realized just as a sequence of notes (e.g. this clarinet performance), the overall stimulation is rather low and boring.
