I wasn't questioning Microsoft's ability to make money in this scene at all - it was more my point that the other console manufacturers are simply left without an option when it comes to licensing...
It's my understanding that typical video game console manufacturers don't make their money off of the console, but rather off of licensing the technology involved in the game cartridge (Nintendo) or licensing the rights to develop games for the console (Playstation et al.). If they allowed "unencumbered" environment, they'd be crushing themselves! Production, sales, and market share would probably bloat, but profit would fall...
I would have to disagree with Rick's closing paragraph... Rick uses the word "we," assumedly referring to society... if we consider survival of the fittest on a societal, rather than individual, scale, I would assert that "weeding out" any individual who returns less to society than society provides for that individual (criminals, welfare recipients, etc.), would end up benefiting us in the long run.
